I believe most of those involved were 40-60yrs old. I don't think the course is the problem.

Not good for our sport. I can not understand hunters that shoot without perfect knowledge of their target. I doubt that these shootings were just stray bullets flying through the woods. Either they were self inflicted or someone shot at something that thought might be a deer. Those type of hunters should not be hunting. :spinning:

These hunters are not hunter's, there people who make hunter's have a bad rep, I am actually very surprised that there are not more, well around my area anyways, I moved down south about seven years and went hunting during the rifle season here on a property and it was night and day compared to back home , I told my self this is the last time I hunt anywhere down here with rifle or shot gun , these guys are complete idiot, not all hunter are but a lot of these guys are, I call the idiots the orange army, they have a bunch of guys at one end and a bunch at the other end and they walk threw pushing everything that moves out , they fire bullets , have horns , and shoot anything that has hair or feathers, then the guys at the other side shoot anything that comes out ( what kind of hunting is this, and how could anyone be proud of killing anything that comes out, not hunting to me ) , they shoot for number's and not respect of the wilderness, I no of two shooting's here this year and no the details of one shooting and it is sick, the adult had an apprentice out with him a young fella and they were pushing a little block with a bunch of guys and there was a deer running in between them and the dummy shot and missed the deer and hit the young fella in the chest the bullet went threw and came out the other side , thank god it missed every organ , I also talk to a butcher that does a lot of deer and he says that there is so much waste on the animals some bullets in the ass and or being shot at least 6 times, what is wrong with these people, I no of some people who go for walks in the woods after the rifle season is over and they find dead fawns , I guess they saw it move a bit shot it and realized it was a fawn so naaaa I don't want it,,, it is definatley not the hunting course that is wrong its some people who are doing it wrong making other hunters have a bad name,,, sorry for all my bitching but that's what I see and hear all around hear, thank god I have permission from a few land lords here who let me bow hunt here alone.,,, and good luck to all the other rifle or shot gun hunters who do it right and do it safe. :readytorock:

to most guys who have a gun in there hand for 1 week a year and 10 cases of beer in there truck headed to camp maybe they should rethink what there doing .
its not new hunters doing this 40-60 yr olds should know by know the laws and safety involved in hunting ,
a deer steps out and all that goes out the window for some they absolutely lose it .
I use to hunt with a guy who got so worked up when a deer stepted out no matter if it was a 10 point or a fawn he went loopy .
if this trend continues I forsee changes coming in some sort of way to curb this .

and for 1 I don't mind having a beer when the day is done but when guys are packin a 6 pack to the stand theres a problem sell your gun and stay at camp and cook you might save someones life

Tell me the truth would you want this guy with a high powered rifle in hands sitting on the watch beside you ?
don't complain if they make stricter hunting laws because of this year .

We'll said bri. It's scary knowing these guys are out there in the woods at the same time as us. Monday evening my road was like the 401. One car went by 4 times..come on, I know right well what he is doing..driving up and down hopping to see a deer and pop it, mean while it's private property on both sides. One truck actually stoped and took a shot at something while my daughter and I were in a tree stand 300 yds away. We all agreed it was more then bird shot he was shooting. Some guy was killed in a similar incident last year. Had I not had my 11 year old daughter with me I would have been out of the stand and out to the rd in a heart beat to open a can of whoopass. Me and another guy seen what we think was him drive by 2 more times. Do you really need to shoot a deer that damn bad.

I do not gun hunt and this is not a slam against gun hunters. I know tonnes of guys who do gun hunt and they seem like safe individuals...BUT these types of stories are the reason I stay out of the woods with my bow for the two week gun hunt. Just not willing to put my life in someone else hands.
Be careful out there everyone.

Exactly. Well said. A couple of these shooting occurred just north of me and I can guarantee they were a mess. At our camp if people party they stay in and are camp cooks that morning. I got no issues with having a party but its at camp sleep in and not with a gun in hand. Some people just don't get it.
I don't always chase tail, but when I do; its whitetail. Stay camo my friends.

I think the picture is a terrible example as I know many camps that following a kill they all take a small chug or shot of whiskey or given alcohol, I highly doubt there are many guys out there with a 26er sitting beside them on the stand.

the problem with the hunting course, is it doesn't teach you how to hunt, it only teaches you to remember to check your gun, point it down range, always ensure the safety is on etc. There is very little about animal identification or actual examples out in the hunting field. no videos showing dangerous situations, hell the course really doesn't even show you how to properly clean your gun, or properly sight in your gun.

we do unfortunately, thanks to Wild TV etc developed a culture that is only out for the kill. I don't know many guys that after they kill something they do huge fist pumps and yell like they won gold at the Olympics, but on TV they do. hunters used to be humble and just happy to be out in the woods whether they kill or not.

Hell, I still can't figure out why bow hunters have to paint their faces like the ultimate warrior, we need to change the course and the culture.

It's a hunter 'safety' course. Not a firearm maintenance and setup course. And once again, almost all of those involved in these accidents are over 40. It's not the courses fault. It's complacency around firearms.

before I jump on the "bad hunter" bandwagon I would really like more details, what were they shot with? there are slob hunters, that much we can all agree on, I hunted with a group just like that, I now hunt many hours west on my own property where I have more control.

The reason I ask for more details is that its easy to jump to the conclusions that most people have posted, but many years ago my dad was charged when he fired his gun and shot one of the group in his hunting party. My dad fired his gun at a bird (shotgun) in front of him, the guy that was struck by the bird shot was behind him, hit with pellets that bounce off and just barely broke skin, but because he went to the hospital, my dad was charged for careless use of a firearm. Shooting one direction, pellets bounced and hit the guy behind you isn't something you would

How many people have been peppered/rained on in the duck blind, how many times have you done the same thing back, with or without knowledge.

But yes, time to slam the slob hunters

I am unsure if you took that "safety course " or not, but they waste more time talking about the same thing over and over again, the course could be done in about 4 hours instead of 3 days.

I get it safety is important, I think having your gun sighted properly and also properly cleaned is part of being safe.

I don't know who gave you your course but when I teach mine, its not a walk in the park and its not about the money its the safety end of things! I will fail people if its necessary! And I would feel terribly bad if one of my students made a mistake, it happens and im not there to babysit them! they prove there competent and done the hunter ed course and firearms course, so don't start that bullsh*t. We as hunters want to be safe but mistakes happen to everyone, even myself! if you have an issue pm me and I will give you my home # and we can talk! but lets keep friendly!!!
you can't shoot em on the couch, go out and get em!

I think the problem is the people that hunt one week out of 52 and then the gun goes in the closet for 51 weeks.

Just my opinion.

I agree with you Brooke handling a gun one week out of the year people tend to forget the safety aspect since shooting an animal is the fist thing on their minds and not safety.
I hunt on average about 30 to 40 days a year and safety is always the first topic with the hunting gang. I will not hunt with others unless I know and trust them.
