Dumb question from a newbie: target shooting?

Hi everyone, sorry if this is a stupid question, I just got my PAL and a rifle, I want to go out shooting it but every range needs a yearly membership. I will barely be able to go out to shoot maybe once a year, so paying $400 to go shoot once is a bit much. am I allowed to get a hunting license and just shoot some targets on a tree in a forest?

Please don't kill me if this is the dumbest thing you've ever heard as I am just learning about all of this.

Thank you.

You can discharge your firearm at a home made target in any legal hunting area where you have a tag and license and there is an open season for the firearm you are using. That is what I would think.

I live out in the country, and we can shoot targets year round. I think as long as your municipality has no restrictions, it's game on!

As far as I know target practicing is allowed between sunrise and sunset throughout the year as long as there is no bylaws in your area saying else wise. What caliber restrictions in southern ontario as well as any open gun seasons. Please on the wake of all the tragic shooting this deer season make sure your have an good backstop and know what lays beyond your target.
