I would recommend a Garmin. I have used most if them from High end Trimble units to a basic GPS unit. Garmins are user friendly, accurate and lots if free software online for them. Look at the Garmin GPS Map 62 or 78. If you are not worried about buying the latest model. Look on eBay for a Garmin 76cx or 60cx.

I have had a 76cx for years. Easy to use very durable and does everything you will need.

Some really good GPS freeware is

garmin all the way

I've had an etrex (no mapping), rino 530 (mapping and radio) like dan says they are great if others in your crew have them, but even on their own they are a great gps and radio. but mostly I use a garmin 60csx with backroad mapbooks chip. those maps make it twice as good, cant go without them now.

never had a problem with any of my garmins, still use the old etrex once in a while too.

when I upgrade I will get a garmin 62 if a new version hasn't come out yet

depending what you need it for, you can get a simple one called the backtrack which lets you flag 3-4 locations to get you to and fro...I use it cause I only need to know how to get back to the camp or truck, or a specific stand, I don't require maps and my tracks etc
