Just looking to start a fun thread here looking back at our yesteryears... What are your memories as a child that really set the hook inspiring your outdoor bug? For me it was watching every episode of the Forest Ranges (great Canadian show) wishing i was Ingin Joe the trapper lol and countless hours of the Red Fisher Show up at Skuttle Butt Lodge even remeber meeting him at the Sportsman Show when it was still the good Sportsman show. I even went as far as cutting electrical cords off appliances stripping them just to make snares lol oh and who can forget racing the the fishing isle at Canadian Tire every time dad took you Hope ya ole have as much fun posting your memories as i did righting about some of mine. |

Definitely, the Forest Rangers... I live only minutes away where they shot the show. Indian Joe, Red Fisher, that Mutual of Omaha hunting show, trips to Canadian Tire... But I have to say it was my dad, and uncle (still here in spirit) who sparked the hunting and fishing bug. I own his old 'huge' two way radios and rifle - part of his collection I used to look at in his hunting room when we visited... Flipping through his old sporting mags was cool too. |

My dad and my great grandpa. I was beside my great grandpa when I was 8 , deer hunting, trapping and just spending times outdoors. With fishing it was Bob Izumi. I always watched nature shows on tv when I was young too. I was always outside getting into trouble. lol. If it moved I was after it. haha.

I remember running hounds with my father as long as I have been alive. He used to have coon hounds but after having kids my mother said he could not be out all night coon hunting with kids at home. So he got into foxhounds and has never looked back. I remember in the summer sitting in a gravel pit listening to hounds run fox at night. I would fall asleep in the back of the truck and somehow wake up at home. I remember back when I could carry the 410 I got for Christmas while the men all had their rifles. One of my fondest memories was my very first dog trial whick my dad won with a dog he called Squealer, he had a really high pitched squeally voice. I was about 8 and I got to put Squealer in the bench show after the first day of running. He was a hell of a hound but man was he ugly. He was 10th on the bench but won the trial. I still have dogs that go back to those blood lines. On TV I remember Red Fisher and Skuttle Butt Lodge, man was he a story teller. Seems like those kinds of old school hunters and story tellers are a dying breed. I meet a few like him when I run hounds. Some of those old timers can tell story after story. That is a lot of what I like about the hound business. It doesn't have to be hounds or deer hunting, just those old time hunters that can tell story after story and they never get old and no one ever even dares to question if it's true or not. On TV these days there is too much made of trophies and size and not nearly enough emphasis on the social aspect or comraderie of the outdoors. I have to be honest, I'm sitting here smiling thinking about some of the times I've had as a boy having a pop while the men were telling stories and having drinks. That is why I hunt and that is what I hope to pass on to some hunters when I go. Enjoy the outdoors but enjoy the people that teach you for as long as you can and hopefully you can be one of those people one day, the kind that new hunters look up to and listen to your stories. |

My main memories are of my late father, uncles and their hunting buddies recounting deer hunting stories from the late 50's through to when I started in the 70's. I was instantly hooked and never tired of even hearing the same ones repeated over the years. Television shows mentioned above( Along with Rainbow Country) also factored in along with the hundreds of old Field & Stream and Sports Afield magazines I read over and over again while waiting for the new one each month. Fred Bear was my idol growing up and guess he was my main inspiration for hunting after my father. |
