94 cm has fallen so far at the airport in Ottawa this season and it's only Dec 23rd. If this keeps up, there will be a lot of dead deer like there were during the 2007/2008 winter. |

I agree...I'm from cornwall so we got about the same amount of snow..its gonna be even harder for them now that all that ice rain has fallen. Makes it even more difficult to walk, let alone run. Especially if they break thru. |

yeah it is bad out there....I went for a grouse/rabbit hunt with my Lab Saturday, snow was knee level in most spots, deeper in others, and then we got about 15 cm more Saturday/Sunday. It could be tough on them that is for sure. The dog got tired of running in and walked in my tracks for most of the afternoon. |

All this freezing rain on top of it will not be good for the deer at all. |

We had 8" of snow..no big deal. Then come the freezing rain on top. Then another 2-3" of snow then more freezing rain. I got my 4x4 stuck twice yesterday. I went out today to bust some trails with the atv for the deer. At times I wasn't even breaking threw with the atv that's how hard the crust is. When I did bust threw it was all the atv could do to bust through. I went to the second spot where I walked in..every 4 or 5 steps I would bust threw. The deer tracks that were in there were doing the same. It's going to be easy pickings for the yotes around here for a good while. Cedars are cloaked in ice, fields are crusted over. I feal bad for the deer. There will be very few 1.5 year old deer around these parts next year IMO. It's not supposed to warm up anytime soon to melt any of his stuff either.. Wish there was more I could do and hate to say it but the deer are in big trouble. |

Freezing rain ontop of snow is really making it a problem for our area (peterborough/cobourg). Thismorning woke up and looked out on the lake to see a coyote laying beside a small doe standing in the middle of the lake. Deer was standing looking at it while it was laying down taking a nap. Must have been waiting for the deer to lay down or make a run for it. Took 3 shots at the coyote with the rifle to scare it off. Coyote took of running and deer walked back to the other side of the lake very slowly, must have been falling into the ice when it took steps. |

The deer are definitely in trouble in eastern Ontario. That's exactly what I have been comparing it to is the winter of 07/08. I do remember though that year we had a major thaw at the start of jan because I found piles of sheds in January when the snow melted also that year I found an insane number of dead bucks does and fawns. At this current rate it will be worse. Also I would guess the deer population is maybe 2/3 of what it was going into that winter. An odd thing I have noticed around home though is that the deer have yet to completely yard up despite easily having 24 inch snow on the ground. |

Nature is not always kind and loving. If there is more snow and not a bit of a thaw then there will likely be some winter kill. But as usual it will be the weakest ones that die off. It's not how we would like to see deer die but it is a fact of life in Canada. The strong will survive and recover. |
