Sorry about your loss. Time for a woodstove? Hydro rates are supposed to go up dramatically in the next 5 years as well. The cost of going green is going to be very costly in Ontario. Germany and Denmark found that out and now they are starting to plan coal plants again.

I am on propaine although I live next to major enbridge gas line lol I filled my tank mid Dec and with the major cold front we are at 50% now. To fi the tank from near empty ranges from 560-700 depending on the rates. I assume are in big demand now so next fill up will be $$!! Next year we are putting a wood stove in the living room. We will hardy go through propane then lol |

Mine in T Bay was just over $200- Ontario Hydro. I have an outdoor boiler and a heat exchanger that takes care of the hot water. But my house has been busy for the last month with visitors and we have been burning a lot of wood. |

My last one was low. In the summer when I am running my AC it is almost double that. I just logged on to the Hydro Ottawa website. Here is a cut and past of my bills for the past 2 years: From (yyyy-mm-dd) To (yyyy-mm-dd) (Number of Days) Amount Due 2013-09-13 2013-11-11 (59) $88.13 2013-07-16 2013-09-13 (59) $146.57 2013-05-13 2013-07-16 (64) $152.31 2013-03-14 2013-05-13 (60) $94.51 2013-01-14 2013-03-14 (59) $113.56 2012-11-13 2013-01-14 (62) $114.02 2012-09-17 2012-11-13 (57) $89.10 2012-07-18 2012-09-17 (61) $148.44 2012-05-15 2012-07-18 (64) $182.52 2012-03-16 2012-05-15 (60) $90.18 2012-01-17 2012-03-16 (59) $110.22 2011-11-16 2012-01-17 (62) $110.93 |

Well burning biomass will keep me working up here in Atikokan and will add quite a few jobs to the local economy with new pellet plants instead of shipping coal in from Alberta. |

I can do a daily use report too. Yesterday I used $.71 of electricity. Summary of your electricity usage Daily View (Jan 7, 2014) Off-Peak 3.16 kWh $0.22 Mid-Peak 2.22 kWh $0.24 On-Peak 1.92 kWh $0.25 Total 7.30 kWh $0.71 But as you can see, I used 7.30kWh over 24 hrs. I am a real miser with hydro. I sit in the dark with a candle on wearing my camo parka. I peddle to power my computer. The kids are allowed 1 hr of an electronic device per day. Either the xBox or the TV but never both at the same time. |

One thing I do to help lower my bills since I heat two homes in NW Ontario is to put plastic on all the windows and I cover the sides of the house with snow as far up as I can go. I know this helps with heat losses. I should qualify that somewhat, Deb does all the windows, it is a big job, and I do the snow piling on the outside of the houses with snowblower and shovel. The plastic on the windows can be bought in kits but we find it much cheaper to buy bulk plastic and double sided sticky tape. Air tight seals and no frosting of windows over the winter. Quite amazing. |

Rene All I was getting at was the province should have just left the coal burners as they were. Especially the two in the northwest. Since the Libs chased all the big manufacturing plants away and there is no load up here in NWO anymore. That would have been the cheapest route for everyone. |

I agree. Although it wasn't liberals that chased manufacturing plants away. It was a lot of other global factors. I assume your talking about pulp and paper and lumber mills. |

Heinz, Kellogs, Caterpillar all would disagree with that thanks to the McSquinty/McWynne Lie-berals. Now they are trying to false stimulate things by giving away our money to cisco. hey didn't McSquinty do that a few years ago to the tune of about 4 million to Novartis? And where is Novartis now?....GONE! Yup they have been stellar performers in this global economy about making Ontario a place to do business. Oh it's other global factors. Yup sure is. The other parts of the globe are better places to do business. And then there is Cliffs......ah no point beating this horse. Good ole Wynne declared when she took office that it was not lost on her that she was part of a minority and a woman and now Premier. My first thought was that it was not lost on me that she was NOT elected to the position. That will not be an acceptance speech will be able to make in the future. Other Global Factors?? .......

We are not here to talk politics but you took an opportunity to take a shot at me. Wasn't it you who asked us to not bring up politics on the forum? Anyway, we were talking about NW Ontario issues and I brought up the Pulp and Paper industry and lumber industry which were crushed the move to a high Canadian dollar and trade practices with the US. In the case of Pulp and Paper it was aggresive black liquor subsidies in the US. Lumber industry was in trouble from falling NA lumber prices due to housing crises and other factors like BC oversupply from Pine beetle and other macroeconomic issues. As for all your cherry picked examples where you pin the blame on the curring liberal government I have no comment. I don't like a lot of what our Ontario liberals have done and yes, our competitiveness as a province is suffering but this has been caused by both provincial and federal governments and many other external factors too numerous to mention. Here is a quote from Steven Harper back in 2000. Really think he is about helping Ontario? “I, too, am one of these angry westerners ... We may love Canada but Canada does not love us ... Let's make (Alberta) strong enough that the rest of the country is afraid to threaten us.” |

lol. who said anything about supporting conservatives? Does criticizing this bunch of lying jokers automatically assume you support a particular other bunch of lying jokers. ...and weren't we actually talking about high electricity prices and living in the north? Where the heck di all that NA liquor blabber come from? |

The liquor subsidy thing is something the US did to help prop up their pulp and paper industry at the expense of ours. Anyway, yes, we got off topic somewhat. No worries. Back to how expensive it is living in NORTHERN ONTARIO. I will introduce local gas price in Atikokan. $1.42 a litre. Deisel $1.54 a litre. |

We don't even have a gas station in rainy river anymore. Imagine a town with no gas station. If we want gas we have to cross the river into Minnesota, or travel east . The gas station couldn't compete with the gas stations across the border. Who can blame anyone from getting there gas at half price |

My hydro bill is around 120-140 a month for a 1400sq ft house. I have my baseboard heaters turned off and just use the gas fireplace. Around 150-170$ amonth for gas. |

Come on guys, some stuff is more expensive but other stuff is cheaper. You have to look at the whole picture. Is everyone in Northern Ontario heating with electricity? My sister lives in a rural area in Eastern Ontario and has electric baseboard heaters so they put in a wood furnace 2 years ago and go through a pile of wood to keep her hydro rates down. My hydro is cheap but I heat with Natural Gas. I spend about $1,000/year in natural gas for heating and hot water for a 1400sq foot house. Okay, let's talk housing costs and property tax. A simple, nothing fancy house in my hood is up around 350k if you were to buy it today and property taxes are about 3,700/year. A 40x110 foot vacant lot will cost well over 100k. A buddy of mine in Elliot Lake Ontario has a house twice my size for half the price. What are property taxes around your parts? Housing costs? I paid 1.25 today per liter of gas. How much is gas in Minnesota? |

Land is cheap is hell up here, homes are much cheaper. We have a ton of land to hunt and fish. It is more expensive for many things but your right Nick, not everything is more expensive. Gas in Minnesota is about 80C litre right now. I heat with gas in Atikokan, cost isn't too bad. I heat with fuel oil and electricity at the farm and bills are not too bad. Looks like I might be burning more oil than usual this year. |

Everyone tells me that. My co-worker told me her bill is 8x higher than mine but she wastes TONS of hydro. I am a super cheap miser for certain things. I hate paying for utilities. $88.13 was my cheapest bill in the past 2 years as you saw from my other post here. |
