Our current computer is 12 yrs. old and is ready for retirement. With so many brands and sizes out there we have no idea which way to go. We only use it to visit fourms and some printing photos. Any good or bad reports are appreciated. Thanks.

The only limiting factor on Macs is $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.

You can buy two or three Windows laptops for the same price.

It is a known fact that if there are 90 million Windows computers out there and 10 million Mac computers (not fact, just an example), who do you think the virus pricks will target?

That is so true. Tough decision when you consider the difference in cost. Computers though sure have gone down in price over the years. I remember spending $4,000 hard earned dollars on a system just 10 years ago that probably doesn't have as much capability as today's smart phone. lol

The best luck I have had is with HP. My desktop and my daughters laptop are both HP and they get used hard. I use my desktop for work and it stays on 24/7 and has been chugging along faithfully for 3 yrs now. Kid abuses the hell out her laptop and it never blinks. I would recommend you go with a laptop and get a wireless router so it can be used anywhere in the house as well as your back yard even if you want. The worst luck we have had is with Acer stuff. Wouldn't buy Acer ever again. As for the Mac vs. Windows, I tend to follow the crowd and stick with Windows.

computer is all personal prefernce. that said a mac you will not have any issues with even if power goes out no lost files. if you children are in school they will be intitled for a mac store discount. if your in for a lap top go to the stores and play with them as they are all differnce . the extra cost of the mac may be off set in the extra cost of anti virus software you must by if you by a bill gates machine and all the updates and time lost due to bill gates f ups ... good luck .

Thanks guys. Macs are out of the budget. looking to spend $5-600. definately going to get a desktop. Been doing some research and the best reviews are coming from Dell and HP. I'm a computer idiot so all listed specs for computers means very little to me. Hoping to shop around this weekend.

Might I suggest you have a look at used or refurbish from the sounds of what you want to do with the computer you could easily get away with a 500 MHZ you can get the whole system for $100 there about
If you want a faster system bigger hard drive then it will cost more
As for brand name I think that’s like asking what’s better a Dodge; Ford; GMC; Toyota; Honda
As for an operating system if you do not get one with the pc you might want to take a look at Linux (most office supply stores sell them) if you do not know about Linux Google it is a free to the public operating system I believe Mac is based on the Linux system and Micro crap is suppose to be leaning towards the Linux operating systems
Be care full not to confuse the computer with the software that runs on the computer
You can think of the computer as your truck and the software as gas that goes into your truck if you put bad gas in her she will run like a pile of dirt
Same as a computer you put bad programs in it and it will not work well for you either
That being said you may just need to reformat your old computer and start fresh
;)
