-To give yourself a personal Avatar go to "My Controls" at the top of page.Click on it----On the left hand side of page you will see your "Personal Profile" in that box you will find "Edit Avatar Settings" click on this.
Now you can pre install an avatar from this site which has a quite a few choices now I think or you can install your own personal one.
For a personal one go to "Your Image Avatars Online" if you are downloading a pic from say photobucket or another online photo source.Cut and Paste your URL in the Online box and at the bottom of page hit "Update Avatar "
You can also put your own personal Avatar on if your Pic for Avatar is saved on your Computer, use the other box and paste the Url in it,Update Avatar at bottom and you should be good to go.
I thought I was wrong once,But I was mistaken

I've got a few avatars from the net. The bubbles one being one of a few. I have some pics on my pc that would look good as an avatar, but for some reason the system won't let me use them?

If they are too big, won't they be automatically resized to fit properly?

I know what you mean coyote.I tried a few pics off my computer just for giggles and they didn't work either.I was assuming they weren't supported so I uploaded them in Photobucket and low and behold it worked.
And the size issue, they should be automatically resized to fit unless the option is not activated.

The pics on your comp are of a jpeg image. If so try cutting the URL from the properties on the pic and try it again.
