NOSA Celebrates 10th anniversary In 1998 the Northwestern Ontario Sportsmen’s Alliance (NOSA) was founded by a small group of like minded outdoors people who shared a passion for our hunting and fishing heritage. Little did we know that 10 years later we’d be called the “Voice of the North” by politicians and media personalities. And rightly so. NOSA has achieved so much in just 10 short years. The time has gone by quickly but since its founding, this not-for-profit group became incorporated and has systematically worked to achieve the status as the “go to” group for various consultations and viewpoints as they pertain directly to hunting, fishing and also trapping issues. The objectives of the organization are very pointed. Preserving our outdoor heritage, along with promoting youth involvement in the outdoors, are two goals that go along with providing a voice for northern outdoorsmen and women. This is backed up by a sound commitment to identifying the best biologic and scientific conservation principles to sustain both northern Ontario’s rich wildlife resource along with those activities and economies that benefit from having such a rich and diverse natural resource supply. By participating closely with both provincial MNR and Federal government officials, NOSA has worked to ensure that common sense is used when making policy and regulations. Sometimes NOSA comes out on top, other times we find ourselves continuing to battle on certain topics such as the call for the return of the Ontario Spring Bear Hunt. Either way, NOSA is at the table and participating. NOSA is not based out of southern Ontario. NOSA’s Board of Directors answers to the resident of the north. We have enjoyed success with issues such as: -NOSA fought successfully to gain use of 2 rods per angler on Lake Superior -NOSA Participating in Moose Aerial Inventory (MAI) -Assisting MNR biologists in field with Fishery Creels -Ensuring Moose Adult Validation Tags (AVTs) are properly distributed -Participated in negotiations dealing with Northern Preference for moose AVTs -Serving on Provincial Big Game Management Advisory Committee(BGMAC) -NOSA members sit on various LCC’s -Our members are influential on Fisheries Management Zone 6 (Co-chair committee) -We lead the fight for Walleye Restoration in Black Bay (Lake Superior) -NOSA leading fight for the removal of Black Sturgeon River Dam -NOSA is opposed to the Federal Firearms Registry -NOSA was instrumental in obtaining additional deer seals in the northern WMUs -NOSA is so far the only openly outspoken proponent of gaining deer license privileges for youth and apprentice hunters. -NOSA fights for the disabled hunters group that has exclusive rights in WMU 11A. These are only a few areas that NOSA works hard on an ongoing basis. This requires nearly full time participation and as NOSA profile in the region grows, so does the need for increased membership involvement and volunteerism. With the assistance of NOSA member Adrian Copetti of Target Internet Development, NOSA’s new website is better able to serve our members. Our site at Team NOSA will keep you up to date on NOSA’s role in the outdoors. Our widely popular “Team NOSA” logo has been improved this year to bring back the moose image that was part of the organization’s first logo. The bull moose head symbolizes the north’s featured big game species but it also represents the strength that NOSA has demonstrated over the past 10 years of its existence. Thank you for supporting your Northwestern Ontario Sportsmen’s Alliance. |
