Stolen from the College boreal website. Sudbury – Denis Hubert, President of Collège Boréal, and Patrick Minshall, son of the late Aubrey Minshall, great Canadian entrepreneur and outdoorsman, officially opened today the Minshall Museum located at Collège Boréal’s main campus in Sudbury. This initiative was made possible thanks to a generous contribution from the Minshall Family. As a result, a $500,000 collection of preserved animals from North America and Africa was offered to the Natural Resources program sector at Collège Boréal. A laboratory was therefore converted into a permanent exhibition room in order to welcome these animals. In accordance with the Minshall Family’s wishes, this gift will greatly contribute to enhancing the students experience in environmental management and conservation programs. « From an educational point of view, this collection represents a unique opportunity to observe uncommon species » explains Karl Aubry, Coordinator in the Technologies and Administrative Sciences sector. Moreover, the impact on Collège Boréal’s training programs already results in new opportunities for hands-on activities which are unique to this educational institution. Among them, anatomical observations or measurement workshops on preserved animals. According to Denis Hubert, this new acquisition will provide several advantages: “Nowadays, being able to use such an environmental popularization tool is crucial when people are concerned about ecology. Furthermore, it is especially true when it comes to meeting the human resources needs demonstrated in this particular sector”. Availability of the Minshall Museum will also be expanded to reach elementary and secondary schools across the region. Thanks to the diversity of exposed species (an elephant, a rhinoceros, a polar bear…) Collège Boréal intends to use this collection as a value-added activity to stimulate international partnerships. The study of local habitats is already part of future projects |
