Just heard on am 640 that this may be the last year of the toronto sportsman show due to Mayor miller not allowing guns at the show..my question is why did it take place this year. and now that we know it may not be back next year in toronto WHY SUPORT IT THIS YEAR. I hate to be the one that said I TOLD YOU SO . US as hunters have just giving toronto like over 2 million dollars. it just boggles my mind.. has hunters and fishermen we should completely boycott the last two days of the show and really show them how we stand together... and i think it should also be the last year that the OFAH has there conference in toronto as well... |

I refuse to attend the Sportsman show mostly because of Mayor Miller's stance on guns. I'll be damned if I'm going to inject money into Toronto when he feels I'm nothing but a criminal because I own guns. If the Sportsman show can move uptown to the International center I will go but will never spend my money in Miller land. As for the OFAH not having a meeting in Toronto, they don't have the spine to make such a statement. |

It most likely is taking place this year due to the fact of sign contracts with the city prior to the new law. If TO is going to be obstinate on the issue, as shown by this new bylaw, then the show should move on, there are many jurisdictions that would love to have a money maker like the Sportsman show. |

Even though I live a thousand miles away and would likely never get to the show anyways, I say if the show is not wanted in Toronto move it to some place that does want it. After all how can you have an outdoor sports show with out hunting guns. Northshore. |

They should look at re-vitalizing the old "Hunting Show" and run one in the south and one in the north. |

Haven't been there in afew years, never found it that special in the first place. It was just an waste of money as far as I concerned. Would rather see them take something lke that an have it in somewhere like Barrie. Matt |

Barrie would be a great place for it. Any other ideas on venues? Who is in on the planning and execution of the sports show now? |

The ofah is a great thing for hunters and fisherman to have. No outdoorsman should ever Dis that. The sportsmans show on the other hand makes me feel sick. Commercialization of nature would be a better show name. Or everything for a $buck$. Or tell and sell. Anyway "BOO" let it die. Support your local shops. |

Just that that show for me seems like a convention of people who market nature. |

Make no mistake, the OFAH IS into earnings and marketing up to their necks. They are a corporation looking to pluck money from unsuspecting wallets. They market conservation and wildlife for their own ends, not for Ontarians. Because of the downturn in the economy, they will be aggressively seeking your dollars. As an organization, their profits and income are down significantly over last year. Beware!! They only care about their bottom line, not yours. Remember, friends and family first. Spend your conservation dollars closer to home and stop sending money to Peterborough. The OFWG are getting older and fatter thanks to your membership money. Get in touch with your local Legion, school, community assoc. or gun club and spend your dollars where you live. Learn more about nearby streams or wetlands. Get the neighbourhood kids involved. Tell the OFAH to stay away. |

Wow! Meplat your post as far as im concerned is right on the money. Why give away your hard earned money to a corporation so they can pay out high saleries to a select few when you can support some local organization and really make a difference. Northshore. |

Thank you, but the trick is finding out how to shutout the OFAH when it's not wanted. Because few people cared, the OFAH was able to wind their way into clubs around the province. They do not represent the interests of local hunting/fishing/outdoor groups. Clubs are viewed as a source of revenue that can be tapped and the money used by head office in Peterborough. According to the OFAH, there are 655 member clubs. I wonder how many of these would retain their affiliation if they realized that shooting insurance was available cheaper from at least two other sources? It's easy to cancel. Just say "We are not renewing." Get shooting insurance from the NFA or the CSSA. There are organizations in your area that could use your club's input and help. Many orgs like your hometown Legion or schools lend their time to local or county govts. Parks and streams that run through your town have fish swimming in them and animals living around them. They have to be clean. History of the region has to be passed on as well as the knowledge of experienced fishermen and hunters both. Deer feeding and yarding areas have to be built and maintained. Turkeys populations have to be monitored. NWTF, DU, COHA and the regional/municipal govts are just a handful of groups that would appreciate your time. It doesn't have to be long or arduous work. It doesn't have to cost you lots of money. It doesn't need to eat up much of your time. For many people on this board that are members of a rod and gun club, the executive has conservation, fishing/hunting or (former) OFAH directors that have contacts within the local community. Volunteers from the general membership too know people and hometown projects that could use some help. Please don't send your money away, keep it in town. Ask your executive to consider alternatives to the OFAH. If insurance is a concern, the NFA and CSSA offer cheap packages with better coverage. If conservation is more of a concern, look at DU, NWTF, COHA or others. Don't overlook your own backyard! |
