An Elk Management Plan has been drafted to deal with the population of the animals in 4-areas of the province.
While elk numbers have exploded in the Bancroft area, they have dropped off in the Cameron Lake area southeast of Kenora.
Christie Curly is a spokesperson for the Ministry of Natural Resources and says while they don't plan to import any more elk into Ontario, there has been talk of moving the elk from one part of the province to another.

I made my comments and offered to help out in any way I can. I indicated that I had many trail cam pics and 7 sheds from bulls. Left my contact information. Of course no response from the MNR. Be nice to see some transfered within Ontario to the Cameron Lk. Herd here in NW.

I can't stand the fact that they won't bring anymore elk into ontario...just when a good thing gets going the government stops it

Hopefully the plan goes through, it would be great to see the other herds become as strong as the bancroft herd.

Good for you too offer your help, hopefully the MNR will grow some brains but I have a funny feeling and Im agreeing with coyhunter that they know how high the wolf population is and are afraid of "wasting" money. The wolves north of me around bancroft are a lot smaller and are designed for killing deer. I think we as hunters are gonna have to make a serious attempt at hunting the wolves. Wolves are a lot more affected by hunting pressure than yotes so every big wolf harvested affects their pack. I really hope that one day I could hunt elk here in Ontario. I think its really cool how you have 7 sheds from elk, thats neat.
I don't always chase tail, but when I do; its whitetail. Stay camo my friends.

the reply post by coyhunter got me thinking that wolves in the north get blamed prety much for the decline of big game in the north but consider this ; with the explosion in bear population and no spring bear hunt or one tag only wmu areas that can certainly sapport two these may be the culprits . outfitters up in the white river area have seen bears stocking cow moose that are about to calf . they wait until the calf drops , the cow is to weak to defend the calf and now one less moose . i can not say that this happens to elk but with calfing happening about the same time as they come out from the den it does seem plausible . if you upset the balance something will suffer and food is food .

Unfortunately I never expect the MNR to do the right thing when it comes to game management. The MNR has $50,000.00 in the budget to trap and relocate a coyote out of Toronto that is eating poodles and Chijuajua's but funding for big game? Give your head a shake. Donna Cansfield the Minister was the former head of the Toronto school board. When in power she removed all hunting related literature and Firearms / FAC textbooks from school libraries. This government is no friend of sportsmen folks.

I live in the area and we see some of the planted elk around from time to time.

Just a note = That Elk are native to NW Ontario. So were the woodland cariboo.
Why they are no longer here is not the question.
( hunters, Wolves)
But, It would suggest the habitat should sustain them.

Nice to see some elk around.

I hunt that area also. We see them but not often. Way too many wolves to sustain a healthy herd. Infested with wolves in this area.

They cannot bring any more elk into Ontario because Manitoba will not allow the transfer of live game animals through their province because they are afraid of spreading CWD! And I believe it is the same for crossing the border into the USA, but not totally sure.
