Ontario will impose higher maximum fines for a number of traffic offences in the new year. For instance, failing to stop at a red light, failing to wear a seatbelt or ensure passengers under 16 are buckled up will see the top fine double to $1,000, from $500. And drivers who fail to pull over and stop for emergency vehicles or follow fire vehicles too closely could be hit with a maximum fine of $2,000, 3-demerit points plus a possible 2-year licence suspension. The current maximum penalty is a $500 fine |
