2008 Fall Turkey Hunt; Ontario Out of Doors

Well I got my OOD magazine the other day and almost read the thing in one day.

According to the editorial on pg 6 a 2008 Fall Turkey hunt is on the way:
Quote:

...an impending announcement from Minister of Natural Resources David Ramsay should pave the way for a fall turkey hunt.

Another full page mention of a 2008 Fall hunt in on pg 2 of the OFAH insert.

This sounds like good news to me. :allright:

One question does come to mind of how the fall hunt will affect the spring limit. The spring limit is two birds in some areas. OFAH is proposing to have a one bird limit for the fall season. When they implement the fall season, would they make the limit for the spring hunt to be one bird?

I had mentioned in a previous post that the wording of question five of the "New Telephone Harvest Reporting System", mentions the "spring" season, which could be interpreted as an indication of a possible "fall" season to come. It seems that we may soon be able to enjoy some fall turkey hunting.

I think it will mean less opportunities for deer hunting. I think the deer season probably for us archery hunters will have to be closed during a fall hunt. I can't see the government allowing the 2 seasons to run simultaneously. I hope this is not the case, although I'm not sure I want guys out busting flocks of turkeys while I'm trying to bowhunt deer. We'll have to see how they set up the seasons if this goes ahead.

If you read the article, it says that the Fall season will run will the archery season for deer to allow hunters the chance to harvest turkeys while deer hunting. The bag limit will be one bird of either sex.

Although, on the other hand those guys may move more deer around in the early fall.
I personally wouldn't want the MNR to shut the bow season down for it. I already lose 2 weeks to the gun seasons.
If you look closely, the MNR is suggesting a select group of WMU's for the fall turkey seasons, not all of them.

I think alot of this comes down to $$$$$$$
We just had birds released three years ago and would hate to see a fall season here already, we are just going to hunt these birds for the first time this spring.

it was something like 12 zones i thought i read, but anywhere we have a good population of birds will be among them or at least next in line

I wonder if that means the fall turkey season will be an archery only season???

Precisely why the fall turkey hunt would be a bad idea. Hunting early season bucks on public land is my main game and I don't want the added pressure in the woods.

It's hard to understand but I believe that the fall season will only be for archery only, so that it does not interfear with the archery season for deer. The first Fall hunt will only take place in 12 WMU's acroos southern Ontario according to the article

According to the O.F.A.H. the fall turkey hunting will be implemented first in WMU's 67,68,71,73,76,77,81,82,89,90,92,93 as recommended by the Wild Turkey Working Group. Visit O.F.A.H. web site for updates and to get involved in the consultation process: http://www.ofah.org/flash.cfm?Dim=1024.

I wouldn't think it to be much different than the current situatuion where guys are hunting rabbit and grouse while your bow hunting for deer. Sure the numbers might increase a little, time will tell.

:( I dont see my WMU on there :shy:

I wouldent hurt me in the slightest. We have turkeys all over the place(surprised our WMU isn't on the list---hmmmm) This would give me the oppertunity to shoot a big tom while deer hunting.I have had so many chances over the years while bow hunting its scarry.

When are the open season dates for this fall hunt?
Like it really matters to me---lol--- <_<

I honestly think this is a bit premature. As far as I can tell MNR does not really have a good handle on the current turkey population the province. I live and hunt around Kingston, and frankly even though the population seems to continue to grow every year. there still seems to be a loot of good habitat that does not contain much in the way of numbers of birds. I would prefer to see MNR let population continue to grow for at least another 5 years. I think the reasons for the hunt or more financial and political then they are based on sound conservation.

I hunt 73 and the population this year seems to be down some as we are having a bad run with yotes which are taking toll on birds. One thing for sure though for those that hunt deer over bait piles you don't want to be shooting your turkey anywhere near it I can see some fines coming.
