How much of a problem are ticks around Ontario?

I hear guys talking about getting them and don't know a thing about them...how would you even know if you got them?

Deer Ticks/Wood Ticks are the same thing. Some people refer to them as deer ticks.

I've never had any on me but I have seen them on moose.

They go crazy over Moose. A buddy of mine told me there was a moose near his camp that has them real bad! It was spotted about 4 days ago.

We have them here along the north shore of Lake Erie. I have found a few on myself in the past few years since I have taken up turkey hunting. I always find them around my hair line on the back of my neck. Usually in May is when I have found them in the past.

I also live on north shore of Lake Erie and their are two types of ticks here, one is the wood tick in the picture and the other is a very small black tick which we refer to as a deer tick.I have brought them home in early spring while out for a walk in the bush.My lab picked one up from me and the tick swelled up to the size of a peril.Had to burn it off her.

You're right, shedherder. I stand corrected, there is a difference between a wood tick and a deer tick.

The ones I've seen on moose turn like a blueish color once they're full of blood.

I have also had them on me, not sure if they were deer ticks or wood ticks. Stay away from the long grass if it is possible they love the stuff. I have had them on my lab as well usually around her ears. Nasty little suckers!!

I recieve deer heads from friends that usually have them. Being in the freezer kills them off. A friend brought one over he shot on open bow season, it was infested so bad that it had small patches of hair missing and the deer was noticeably under weight. Also last year while hunting Ihad an annoying itch like a sliver in my shirt, when I opened my shirt there was one of them stuck to me :wow: , it was on there good. I headed back to camp and changed my clothes :(

I've had so many on me over the years in the Rainey River District....I'm not going there...lol. I've had a few bite. Very rarely have I seen deer ticks, just wood ticks for the most part. In Oklahoma last year I got introduced to a few new varieties of ticks. Seed ticks are small little annoying things much smaller than wood ticks......grrrrrr.

I have never seen a tick that wasn't on a dog. I lay on my belly with my xbow on a log for turkeys and have had no sightings. The areas I hunt both turks and deer are the same and theres lots of both. Must not be many around here!

wow. i thought some of you guys were kidding about no ticks. here in wisconsin they are thick. especially in late spring. i've had over 100 crawl off customers early season bow deer capes. when i get home from turkey hunting my clothes stay outside as they are covered with ticks. i hatem but it comes with being outdoors around here. the one thing that sucks about them is they carry lymes disease and i know of quite a few cases around here. i'm not sure where some of you are from but does it seem the further north you go in ontario the less ticks there are or does it seem to be just certain regions that don't have them.

Certain areas don't have them in Ontario. In Marathon I have never seen a tick before. If I head west I will start to see them past Thunder Bay and once you get to the Fort Frances/Kenora region they are pretty thick. Not sure what they are like on the east side of the province.

i'll get the name of the stuff everyone reccomends in North Carolina, whenever we head down there hunting we always spray our pant legs with this stuff. Its a staple item in everyones packs down there. Buddy of mine got rocky mountain spotted fever last year, he was laid up for about a month.
they have these other ticks down there they call red bugs, real small and red, almost looks like small seeds.

I've never pulled any off of me, and I've never even seen one in any of the areas I hunt in Eastern Ontario, but as I mentioned earlier I've pulled some off of moose in Northern Ontario. One of my dogs got one on her while I was taking her for a walk in the woods of Quebec. It wasn't a hard tick, it was one of them soft ones that turn a blueish color once the get full of blood. Same as the ones I've pulled off the moose.

Any one heard that Brad Paisley song?? "I'd like to check you for ticks" Too funny lol)))

I've pulled plenty of ticks. What amazes me is how they burrow themselves right under my skin without feeling a thing. I hate ticks :run!!:

I love that line! I just heard it the other day again while driving in the car with my wife. She didn't think it was as funny as I did. :crazy2:

I've been hunting Eastern Ontario for 40 yrs. and have never had to pull a tick as of yet. Apparently men and women do not share the same sense of humour Paul.

The ticks are showing there ugly head more and more around the Thunder Bay area....10 years ago this was not the case....they are moving more and more north. The dogs have had some on them in the 8 years I have been in Thunder Bay, but not us fortunately....I hate them and they have ruined days for me...they are like leaches....for some reason I just can't stand either one of them.
Rene you are right....Fort Frances/Kenora area are thick with them....walk in the bush come out and you are alittle heavier than when you first went in.
Back home in Alberta we used to see moose covered in them....it was a matter of time before they died.....they would rub up against anything to try and get them off...that is why they have no hair on them...sad really.
Well now that I am freaked out....back out in the yard I go :run!!:
