Don't overcall and listen to the turkeys. I like to try to make similar sounds to what I'm hearing if I can hear hens. You may want to try fly down imitating sounds. Lot's depends on your location and the area your hunting in. Small woodlot? Are there other hunters around. How close are you to the roosting areas if you know this. Are you set up in an area they are likely to travel? I figure more of my success is do to the "hunting" and thinking about what the turkeys are doing more than my ability to call. I always have lots of calls with me and I use whatever I feel like at the time. I use pretty much everything at one time or another it seems. Having said all that, I thinkk the turkeys themselves will be your best teacher. Have fun and getting your hands on disks and video's is awesome! I like to pop Discs in while I'm driving. We got most of our disks from purchases of calls. I don't practice enough but I find I get better and more confident as I experience each hunt.

renegades right. ive been hunting those darn things for 15 years now and if theres one thing that i feel would be the most important aspect it would be this. be where the toms want to go. if they are with hens walking away from you forget it BUT if your out in front of them and he's with hens you've got a chance. watch there habits before season and wait along the toms route. as far as sounding like a hen. they make some god awful noises. probably yelp or cut is your best bet and like renegade says don't overcall. its hard not to overcall cuz he's gobbling everytime you hit the call sometimes but make him come looking for you. he'll hang up alot of times if you overcall and strut and gobble for hours sometimes and never move any closer. natures way is to have the hens come to the gobbling so he likes to stay put and let the hens come to him. decoys are a great help if they haven't been overused. one other thing. i've killed most of my toms late in the turkey season. the hens are usually on nests by then and the toms are frustrated and moving all day. they come to calls great later on as long as they haven't been pressured by alot of calling throughout the season. in wisconsin we have six one week seasons and i usually hunt the last two but i'm not sure if you have that option. GOOD LUCK. you'll have fun. |

I agree don't talk to the bird's on every call . I usually respond right of way ,but when the bird start's to come in ,I only respond every 2nd or 3rd call . Sometime's they like to hang up and expect the hen to come to them ,so when you don't reply to their call they get agitated and keep coming in ,not alway's but more often than not . nubo |
