Well made it out again this AM with bird's everywhere, got set up close to a roosting area first thing and had bird's sounding off all around me. Did some soft tree yelp's and purr's while they were still on the roost and a fly down cackle and flapped my hat around 6:15 and after about 2 min's they started to hit the ground. Gobbled afew time's while on ground then all was quiet untill around 7:30. I was looking around the other side of the tree to see if anything was walking out in the field and caught some movement which I thought was hen's,started to do some soft yelp's and cluck's to catch there attention and all 10 head's started to turn a bright red, white and blue and 1 broke into strut"all jake's". Here they come and I can't move my gun into position and had my head cranked in the wrong direction. Had these bird's come to within 15 yrd's except for 1 that peeked from around the other side of the tree I was up against "maybe 6 feet away" and staring at me all this went on for about 20 min's and my neck and shoulder were starting to cause me alot of pain and I could'nt handle it anymore so I ended up spooking them. Made 1 more move and switched up the mouth call and waited about 20 min's before calling. Used the paddle call to try and get something going and off in the distance I heard a faint gobble worked him with the paddle call untill I figured he was about a 100 yrd's away then switched to the mouth call. This bird came in full strut, gobblin, spittin n drummin the whole way and had maybe a 9" beard. Let him get into about 35 yrd's and I pulled the trigger MISSED!! I WAS P****D! This is the 1'st time I missed a bird with the gun and I was'nt happy with myself but it happen's and it happen's to the best of them. Was gonna go out again this afternoon but were getting a storm here so NOPE. Try again tomorrow. Now I know how my SON felt Craig |

Don't sweat it, snortwheez. The season is long and it sounds like you're in a great spot, so I'm sure you'll get another crack at one. Good Luck! |

bet the kid feels much better now that good ole dad missed one My first several birds all went without a hitch, thought, this is easy if they come in close enough, how could you miss? Well i have missed a couple of times now, and its much easier than you think Sounds like your having a great season so far |

It sounds like you have yourself a good hunting spot! If all works out you nab that gobbler before long, as was already said, the end season is still a long ways off. I hear ya about the craning your neck, I was in the same situation yesterday, but the Jake did give me an opportunity to move the gun to get a shot. Better luck next time. Ven-ator |
