Hi All, Newbie turkey hunter here! What is the general concensus on turkey hunting in the rain? Do they respond differently than on a nice sunny day? Is there a better call to use? It is supposed to be rainy and showers here in the big O this weekend, and I need some tactical advice. Adrian, if you're out there big guy, what do you say? BrianV |

turkey hunting in the rain is fine except not much luck when it pours. if it does rain hard get out immediatley after it stops as the birds seem to go nuts. i'm not sure if they head to openings to dry off after a heavy rain or if they are just anxious to get back in the fields again to do some strutting but its usually awesome hunting right after a heavy rain in these openings . as far as calling is concerned just do as you usually would. slate calls are tough to work in the rain unless your in a dry blind and even then it can be tough with that much moisture in the air. you may not hear as much gobbling at daybreak as you would on a nice sunny morning but they're still around just not talking as much. GOOD LUCK |

during rain they tend to me more out in the open since they can't hear anything in the woods they like to sit out in a field to watch for predators. they will also sit tight in the roost for much longer, just hunt the fields and be patient. Make sure your call is waterproof as well, nothing worse than trying to get a decent yelp out of a soggy box call |

While out yesterday hunting, it was raining, but not hard, the gobblers were answering the crystal and the box call. They did not seem to mind, I have a poncho that I threw over my legs and half of my upper body, and it keeps me dry during the worst of the rain. I could also use the calls beneath the poncho. The crystal would not work when it got wet, but I have the new Primos wet box call, it was unaffected by the rain. Well, as for turkey behavior during a real heavy rainfall, some else maybe able to give better insight. I will hunt whether it’s raining, snowing or shining, that is why I always carry a camo poncho. Thanks Guys, this is the kind of info I am looking for. I am hunting from both a blind and walk and stalk some soya fields, so I will obviously be heading to the blind during the rain, but will get to the fields when it stops and try to cut some of them off. BrianV |
