Well my first hunt of the season was a fairly short one this morning. 5.00 a.m. found me dropping by Nubo's house to meet him as he was just getting home from a night time rainbow fishing trip and they had a cooler full of nice bows but I couldn't talk him into grabbing a gun and coming along. Off I went to a favourite spot and by 5.30 am I was walking across a hay field in real thick fog. I did a couple sessions of gentle hen yelps and settled in for a wait. Around 6.45 I got a little more agressive and put a bit more volume to it with my favourite Quaker boy box call and a Tom gobbled right back but he was on the wrong side of the field and across the road near where my truck was parked!! A couple more anwers and he committed to the field and by then the fog was lifting enough that I could pick him up with my 8x42 Vortex binos at about 200 yds. Even from that distance I could tell he was a good one. We played a game of what seemed like the kids' "marco-Polo" as he worked his way to my single bobbing head hen decoy. Everytime he gobbled I immediately yelped back and he was running across the field at one point, waddling and gobbling. Then the breeze picked up a bit and it started moving my hen decoy's head nice and regular side by side and at one point the body even started to sway in the breeze. That was all the Tom needed and when he saw that reassuring movement from the decoy broke into a full strut for the last 50 yds. At that point another bird gobbled right behind me and seemed about 100 yds away and closing fast but I wasn't going to blow my cover by turning around to look. That drove Tom #1 berserk and he stood there in full fan and gobbled like he was choking on a bug !!!!! LoL. Then he must of spotted # 2 because he turned away from the decoy and started in the direction of the other bird. I figured OK its show time, now or never and put my red dot just below his head and my 3" load of #6 Hevi shot from my Remington 11-87 SPS-T rolled him at 40 yds. Surprisingly the bugger didn't die at the shot and his head was straight up as I approached him so I let him have another in the head "just in case". He ended up weighing 20.89 lbs, has a double 8" beard and 7/8" spurs. I was home in time to make my kids breakfast. Not a bad start to my weekend (Nubo took some pics so when he gets them to me I will post them) |

Guy's I got a few pic's and I was about to post them ,but the batteries on the cam are dead ,so I'll get them to you tomorrow . We got 8 bow's today ranging from 2lbs to 8 lbs . The trip with the kid's is another story ,so I'll save it for last on Monday. We're heading out again in a few hour's and the river is loaded with fish ,so I'm sure we'll have another couple to view tomorrow . Terry's bird was a very nice bird ,did he tell ya's that he showed up at my door at 5:00am and we were sitting in the garage drin\king coffee I didn't think so I'm off to bed ,not a whole lot of sleep the last couple day's .nubo |

Thanks Shane. Actually you raise a good point about the size of the birds this year. Personally this is my heaviest bird yet but two of my buddies who have also scored got what I consider "normal" sized birds which is @ 18-19 lbs. There certainly seem to be some whoppers taken so far this season. Maybe the mild winter has something to do with it. Maybe some of our more "experienced" ( hint, hint Adrian ) could give us thier opinion on this trend to largre birds. |

I think most Tom's are in the 20lb mark ,so getting bird's over 20 and 21lbs is a little abnormal to me ,although I have heard of a few bird's pushing the 25lb mark ,I'm yet to actually see one .I've taken 4 bird's over the 20 to 21 lb mark myself ,but never over the 22lb This does seem to be a real good year for bird's pushing over the 22lb mark ,because I've seen a few of them posted here . Those bird's are dandy's for sure ,and I think few and far between .I also think that there has been alot more feed for these bird's this season since the winter month's were actually very short this seaon . Congrat's to Terry and everyone else who has been successful this season . nubo |

To put the bird sizes into perspective, I checked mine in at the Wolfs Den which was a certified weigh station when that was law. They still weigh them because they run a contest. On Saturday morning @ 9.00 a.m. they had about 100 birds checked in and the biggest at that point was 24 lbs. These are not "guesstimates" but true weights from the same scales they used last year and years prior. So I would say anything that cracks 25 lbs ( weighed ) is a true trophy bird. |

yes Terry took a good one last week. I'm finding it aa frustrating year this year as the start is so early that it makes it hard to find birds without any mates. I watched a longbeard since before the season in a place. Every night at the 6:00pm he would enter a small corn field. I would see him every night at the same time. Over the past week he has had 5 other birds join in. This afternoon I decided to give him a try so i showed up at 3:00pm for a date. As I got there, there was no birds in sight. I got set and waited out the rest of the afternoon with my partner. I was on camera and the shooter was the pointer. Well needless to say I spoted the birds got placed well and sure enough at 6:15pm the birds entered the field and walked right up my side. At 25 yards the longbeard stopped on a dime as I Clucked and placed the camera lens to film a great 25 yard Miss ! I've had far more No shoots and misses then birds taken this season. Guess it happens... |
