What a hunt!! Beautiful country, lots of action and some great new friends. Rene tagged out on the first day nailing two birds with one stone, so instead of him squirming at camp with nothing to do, he would either go do some more scouting, or he hung out with me for a little while and we went for a great tour of the areas that I hadn't been to yet. He carried me across a very cold and fast running river system....I wish y'all could have seen that. Its really hard to take good pictures while your busting a gut laughing. :haha: We spotted a bird at the bottom of a bank, strutting up a storm, and in a matter of seconds, he had jumped across, and ran up the bank and practically ran us over. (rene wanted me to shoot over his back, but I couldn't take a chance with a wandering pellet...) There were so many intense turkey moments....what a rush. We were supposed to leave on Friday bright and early, but I still didn't have my bird, so I decided I would go out in the morning and be back by 10 and we would be packed and gone by noon. (rene got to sleep in) I went to a couple of different spots, and had a little action, and then got henned in by a couple of nosey birds, and when I went to my final spot, it was the last hour. By nine oclock, I had all the branches stripped away from under the tree I was hiding under, I had my calls out and the gun was ready. I used the range finder to see how far everything was away from me, so I knew what my maximum was. I am more comfortable with the yardage between 25 and 35 yards. I hear a little yelp, and knew the bird was across the little lake, but it sounded like a hen. No problem. I waited to see what she would do. Mabey she would bring a man or two with her... I heard a gobble in the distance. After awhile, I heard some movement in the bush, so I got the gun ready for this bird thinking that it was gonna be a hen, but mabey there would be more then one bird. My gun is pointed to the spot where I think she is gonna come out. Whats this???? I see a beard. This is good. He didn't see me, he was just looking for the sexy little girl that was just calling a few seconds ago. (yes, I think I am sexy.. :girldance: ) He's just strolling along, but the grass is a little longer then I thought....(next time I'll get the mower out ) He walks a couple of feet, and I have to tell myself, BREATH...and then I shot. I pump the gun and keep it pointed at the bird. I am not sure if I was even breathing. He kept his head on the ground, but the rest of his body was doing this break dance around his head in a circle.. :spinning: I was absolutely terrified he was gonna get up and fly away. So I slowly come out from the tree, take a couple of steps and wait, keeping the gun pointed right there. ('aint no way he is getting away) I take a couple more steps, use the bino's to see if he is still breathing, and squat down again. He hasn't lifted his head up, but every now, I get a little flutter and my hearts just a pumping. It seemed to take for ever, but I am sure it was only a couple of minutes and I am standing over my bird. First thing I looked at was his spurs. I HAVE SPURS!!!!!! I even have a beard that is longer then 4". The sun was behind me, so I can see the shadow on the side of the hill, so I do a little victory whoop and a girly dance. I got my bird. I got my grand slam. I gather up my gear, and hike the bird over my shoulder and head for home. This sucker is heavy by the way. I get up the drive way, and I t hink I had cramps in my cheeks from the grin on my face. I see the kitchen curtains move and then Rene looks out. I did a little turkey spin, so he could see more then just bird wings and the whole family comes running out. I set my bird down and my gun and do my little turkey dance again. Rene takes note of the time. ...9:45am. He just shakes his head and comments on me waiting till the last hour.

What a morning. So Rene was checking the bird out, and I noticed that the beard was kind of whispy compared to some of the mops I had seen on some of the other birds. Then I look a little closer and tell Rene.....its a double beard. :omg: So I have my first Tom, I have my first actual spurs and not little nubs, and I have a double beard. He weighed 20.25 pounds. YUP.....it was a great morning and an awsome final touch to a great trip.

12:15 we hit the road and Rene just shakes his head and says.....double beard!!! :wub:

I have to say that you sure earned this great bird. Day after day hunting dark to dark. I watched as Deb called a Tom in from 300 yards away 2 times in a row. She chose to use a more excited series of clucks and yelps from a box. Did she ever have that bird fired up. Love being on high ground and able to watch birds and their reaction to different sounds. Our set up may have been better in terms of Deb's field of view. Tom gave me nice 20 yard shot but didn't want to come in all the way to the decoys Deb was set up over. We also put on some great foot miles and located a band of 3 Toms that were coming in towards our seemingly slam dunk location until a live hen came and stole the show and steered the Toms away. I like this talk of "first" slam in title.... :dance2: kind of indicates more turkey hunting for the various subspecies in years to come. I'm not going to complain..... (;

Thanks guys! I have to say, I am quite pleased with myself, and am looking forward to the next adventures. Bieng able to see these birds (any species) in the field, even if they don't come all the way in for you, and watching how they interact with each other and how they respond to the calls you are doing, sure gives you more educated ideas for the next bird. The first thing on my list is gonna be a better seat. I never did get to that inner tube idea, and I don't like it when my butt or lower back decides to scream at me before I am ready to move... :girlmad:

That sound's real good Deb ,what you need to try is to fillet a breast up and rollit in a batter and deep fry it . I tried it last season and it's just like buying chicken finger's ,only they're called turkey finger's LOL

Again congrat's o0n your great season and you have yourself a good teacher in Rene. Or maybe I should say Rene has himself a good teacher LOL lol)))
By the way Deb I really enjoyed your story ,and I' would just like to know what Rene was thinking when he seen you walking back to camp with such a great bird :allright:

DOUBLE BEARD ...........Damn .......... I'm sure that's what he was thinking lol)))

I was thinking Oh My God! She pulled it off. I was so happy for her! When I seen she had an awesome Tommy Tom that just added icing to the cake. I was thinking this is going to be a great trip home. She had a grin on the whole trip and her little joke was to gobble and hold up two fingers..."double beard". He He He. I think it is awesome Deb has taken such an interest and I have to say that she really has skills calling birds. She uses a slate, box and mouth calls really really well. Better than I can so yes I do have a good teacher! :wub:

DOUBLE BEARD ...........Damn ..........

I thought that too......lol.

Actually seen a bearded hen and another double bearded bird. Both me and Deb were together when we had a bearded hen go by an old cabin we were calling from. About 6-7" beard but thin. I whispered she could take her but she wasn't having none of that she wanted a big gobbler. Great times. :wOOT:

I know this reply is a little late Deb ,but turkey lasagna sound's really great . I never thought of trying turkey in that fashion ,just might have to try that myself this coming spring. Thank's for the great idea. OH yes I have to add your story was great ,but i'm sure Rene wasn't doing much sleeping while you were hunting ,I'm sure he couldn't get his mind off of how you were doing out there .
