Had my chance and blew the shot and...; ... MISSED A NICE TOM!!!

This morning at 6:15 am I called in 2 nice Toms from over 500 yards across the field. When they got to approx 25 yds (which I figured was 30 yds) I put my 30 yard pin on his vitals, released my arrow, and watched it go sailing right over his back. MISSED!!!... ... The toms didn't know what scared them but they knew something wasn't right, so they just kinda walked away into the trees and that was the last I saw of them two.

I saw three more toms not long after, but they were about 200 yards away and had two hens with them so they completely ignored my calls and decoy.

Needless to say I'm not too happy with myself right now because that was a shot I would have easily made if I would have split my pins, but it all happened so fast I didn't have time to think... <_<

That's why it's more fun with a bow Lonewolf and that's why you do it.

Yeah, that's true, and the season is long...

The good thing is they didn't even know what it was or where it came from... lol.. Both toms just kinds looked back and started walked away at a fast pace and they stopped at about 40 yards, looked around and went into the woods slowly, so they aren't too rattled up.

that's too bad Mike but it's so easily done when bowhunting. Keep at it and I'm confident you'll get em.

This weekend is bow-only for me so here's hoping I get my yardage right ;)

I missed too and I had a xbow so today I went back to the same spot with the 12 iron. Da##ed if I didn't get a hole in two. Knocked him down, got back up and the race was on, I won the foot race. He has an 11" beard and weighed 25.2lbs, weak in the spur with only 7/8 but all in all woohoo. The best days are yet to come and now the bow hunt is back on for me. The hens are starting to set, finally. Good Luck!.

How where you set up Mike? Ground Blind? I think the next time I try bowhunting I am going to mark off distances on the ground at 5 yard increments. At least ten. I can't hit the broadside of a turkey at 25 or 30 yards. My maximum effective range is about 15-20...lol. You will get more chances I'm sure. Good luck with the hunt, I'm sure it was very exciting despite the missfortune. :allright:

Lone Wolf,
Are you using a blind? If yes I would range out certain reference points up to your comfortable shooting ranges from the blind. As soon as old Tomboy steps over the magic line, "thump" !!!!!!!!!!!

I was just hunkered down on a cedar treeline and wasn't using my ground blind, but I should have had it. It's pretty tricky without a blind to draw on them without getting busted, especially when there's more than one there. lol

I would have taken more time for the shot if I was in a blind as well. You know how it is, you think of all the things you should have done after it's too late. :bang: ... But yeah, I'll be taking my blind with me from now on. I'm also gonna move my decoys in a bit closer.

I had my range finder with me (always do) and had my bobb'n head hen set at 20 yards and they were behind the decoy and I misjudged the distance in between them and the decoy. The worse of it is one or two inches lower and I would have cut his spine and he wouldn't have went anywhere, it was that close. It's my fault for not thinking straight before taking the shot.

its nice to get them in close enough for a shot though, you already had that bird tagged if using a shotgun, so hats off for going out with the bow. Just hope i get one that close

Happens to each one of us over the years. At lease you had him in close enough for a shot.
