Well just got back from turkey hunting ,wasn't bad but came home empty handed. Jared and I sat for about 2 hr's before we heard anything . We then heard the gobbler for about an hr ,but had yet to see it ,finally it showed itself and he was about 150yrds across in another field from which we were hunting . I tried getting his attention ,but he didn't seem to be too interested . He disappeared for about 15 minute's and then reappeared ,this time he seen my decoy's and made a beline towards us .I figured this is it ,he's coming in ,he got to within about 50yrds and he watched my decoy's patiently gobbling and gobbling and gobbling .I really thought he was coming in ,because he had come 100yrds and he was only 50yrds away now . I'm not sure ,but it's possible that Jared might have gotten too close to the window of the blind and that may have spooked him ,but I'm really not sure .I watched him in my bino's and he had about a 9 or 10" beard ,and now I really know what the guy's are meaning when they talk about paint brush's ,this guy had a beard that must have been at least 4" wide ,seriously . As he got to the edge of the field he decided to head into the ravine, and that was the last I ever seen of him .
I must say it sure take's alot of patients to taking a 10year old turkey hunting ,we had only been hunting for 10 minute's before he was complaining of being bored and started playing with my call's and talking loud and coughing repeatedly .Regardless I had a lot of fun bringing him along . I'm going to head back in the early morn ,because I know this bird has settled for the evening in this ravine ,I may have to rearange my ground blind ,but I know I'll get a little closer and just maybe I'll be coming home with a paintbrush.

good luck out there, and i hear ya with the kids, but its great to bring them along. Its more about them being with you and you getting a bird, that is until they start using your tags with the apprentice program, then you can't wait till they turn 15.

Good luck in the morning, will be out myself

lol))) You talking about my son-lol-He is getting better now, when he talks its just a whisper. He gets figity real easy, wants to pick bark off the trees and break branches, you know the routine.I have to be honest with everyone here and say sometimes its all I can do to not get mad at him for making so much noise but then I remember I was his age as well.I usually just give him my knife and let him widdle a stick, when something shows and I give him a little nudge and point in the direction the animal is,he just freezes and he is completely in the mood to hunt now--lol
I cant get out the door for a hunt without him and I woulent have it any other way--he is my hunting partner for life :D :allright:

Good luck with the tom,and hopefully we will be seeing pics soon

Nubo,
Do you have a movie camera you could let him use? That might just keep him busy enough while the birds are are close in. Don't give up, go get that big bugger !!!!!!!

Well I was out again this morning and it was pretty much the same scenario . I had 3 tom's gobbling in 3 different direction's ,1 was behind me deep into the cedar swamp ,I'm gonna guess about 200 yrds deep .I called him severel time's ,some he replied and some he didn't ,just when i figured I was wasting time on him ,he started to close the distance and fast . before I knew it he was coming out of the hardwood's directly to my left and crossing the corn field beside me ,I looked to my right and there all alone was a hen walking directly to my decoy ,so I figured this is good ,because just maybe she'll draw this big boy in to me. Guess again, he stood all alone on top of the hill gobbling like crazy ,the hen meanwhile started putting and seemed to be a little ticked with my decoy and wandered over to it and then proceeded to walk directly up the hill where the Tom came from. Before I knew it he was hot on her trail ,I tried calling with a little emotion ,but unfortunately it wasn't enough and they both disappeared into the wood's . In the meantime I watched at least 10 deer walk directly down the fencerow.,then 3 more deer crossed the field in front of me ,I must say the deer look real healthy and should be in great shape for this fall's hunt .
I relocated my blind and cut 2 blind's into a cedar bush which should give me some real good cover this afternoon . But all in all it was a great morning ,it's not all about killing a bird ,the action I've been getting look's promising . I just got to figure out what's the problem with this Tom hanging up on me ,just out of my range. I borrowed a friend 2 decoy's that have a little more colour to them and maybe the blind is the problem ,so now with cutting t2 natural ground blind's ,just maybe thing's might change . We'll see ,let youi's know tonight how I make out this afternoon.

If that Tom is spooked by the decoy you might try calling without one and see if he comes in closer to investigate ?

Tim!

Maybe your right ,I should keep my ugly mug under cover LOL. Seriously there's something about this tom ,i think I'm going to have to cut him off ,he seem's to take the same route across the middle of the field . So I'll see what happen's tonight.

Well guy's I really blew it this morning . Yesterday I sat my blind up near the exit route where I had seen this tom leaving the field . After about 30 minute's of not hearing a gobble I hear someone calling deep in the wood's just across the property line , so I decided to let him do the calling and just maybe he'd lure one in from across the field fopr me to stick ,but all of a sudden I hear this crashing and there was the tom flying off the roost about 20yrds inside the hardwood bush from me .if thing's weren't bad enough another flew a few minute's after him .I figured this hunt's done ,so after waiting a few minute's I'm crawling out of my blind and all of a sudden this deer jump's straight in the air as I was crawling out ,niot 10 yrds from me ,i was so surprised i almost fell backwards over my blind . This deer was approaching my blind from behind and I never heard him coming . After all this ,I decided to call it a day and drove up the hill and met up with my buddy TerryM and his brother in Law Orlando ,they seemed to have a little better luck than I did and at least had bird's working and Orlando has his chance to shoot a bird ,but wasn't sure of the distance ,so he opted not to shoot . Terry and I gave him a rason of his life because he figured the bird to be about 30yrds away lol))) . So I'm done for the weekend and will try again tomorrow morn .

If anything bad can happen it'll happen to me lol)))

If it was too easy they would call it shoppin !!!!!! lol)))

Yup lots of action this am for my brother in law and me. I set him up where I know they always come in from and at first light had 3 different gobblers sounding off big time all around us and a couple hens flew down off the roost right behind us. Did my magic and dirty talked a tom in to 30 yds from my bro in law and I guess after being picked on so bad for missing one at the exact same spot last year, he's too nervous about a 30 yd shot!!!! I tell him he is using a darned 12 gauge not a .410 :boxing:
Ahh, he's a good lad maybe we pick on him too much lol)))
