That turkey like to follow you when you are hunting. Arrive at 5:00 a.m. at the landowner's property. Did a predator call (crow) to locate the roosting birds. Not a reply, even after a few repeats. Day doesn't look to promising. A decide to walk slowly around the fiel at the edge of the wood and make the odd Yelp and Cluck to see if any of them still hidding. Well time goes buy and still no replies or sighting. Daylight is upon me and I notice that I'm oppisite the field and if a positionned myself on this side then I'll have the Sun in the face, so I find a narrow part of the field to cross over. Walking in a crouched position real slow and stopping often and waiting. Half way across, I give a glance on my left and what the heck there a Tom walking behind me, following me at 7 yards. Amazed that a turkey doing this, I stop, it stops and hesitates 2 seconds and then walk four steps in the oposite direction and takes flight. It never landed in the field, it continued flying over 150 yards and then curve in the woodlot of the other landowners property (which I don't have permission to hunt. The turkey never made a sound. I could of kicked myself, why did I not just drop my slate call to the ground raised the shotgun take the safety off and blast the turkey. I need to be quicker on the reflex. Of course never was able to get that one back of get any response from others. |
