That is a good step by step. This may be helpful on a nice tail mount, but make sure the tail is washed and rinsed real well. Any blood, grease, dirt or soap residue left on will keep the feathers from closing together nicely, especially the tips. They should close up after drying unless they are damaged, also blow dry on an angle from the base up to the tip. Also instead of buying a can of bondo for all you need you can buy a small package of epoxy, just kneed to the two parts together and apply this to the base. Any questions just pm me. |

good tips alf. you can also save some money by soaking the tail in coleman fuel after you wash and rinse it. this will pull the oil and fat off feathers and skinned areas.it is the same white gas that you use with your lanterns. it is much cheaper than the degreasers they sell and does an excellent job of degreasing and the feathers will dry off alot faster when you blow dry them . i've mounted hundreds of birds using coleman fuel and many other taxidermists i know also use it with excellent results.you can reuse it many times until it is toodirty to use . ( use outside or in a well ventilated area) |

Thats pretty cool, I still have to do my gobbler from last year. I like the bondo idea, never used it in the past, probably give it a try. Thanks

Okay did I do my mount wrong.I removed all the fat/meat with a knife/wire brush Then wiped it gently with none scented baby wipes front/back . Placed it on a piece of cardboard pinned it not through the quills but next to every other one .Placed Borax under the base carefully to to get it every ware then did the same on the top ware needed then placed a piece of cheese cloth and 1 page from the newspapper to keep the dust off.So did I do something wrong or is there more then 1 way to mount a tail fan? |

Sounds pretty good to me. Did you get a poor result? There are other posts and links here on mounting tail fans, also, you could do a google search and see what that brings you....good luck! |

Beanzy, most important is to have all the meat and fat removed from the base of the quills. If you don't it will attract bugs, and if you have other mounts in your house they may find their way into them, unless they were done properly. You can spend 10 min or you can spend an hour preping your tail, in the long run you can notice the difference in a properly cared for tail. Sounds like you are doing fine.
