Hey everyone, before I start I hope everyone scrolled down far enough to get the explanation behind my last post. My son was playing on the computer and I forgot to log off from OTB and he wrote the post. There was no hen shot with a crossbow. I was quite upset and we later had a long discussion about the internet  Anyway on to the good stuff. Saturday morning I got up around 4 to head out to a new property that I haven't hunted on for turkeys. The only scouting that I was able to do was the previous Sun. when I watched two jakes through the binocs cross the field at the very back of the property. I arrived at the field about 5:15 a little later than I wanted as the walk to the back of the field was going to take another ten minutes. I quickly through on my camo grabbed my gun and calls and I was off. I was trying to decide where to set up as I walked through the field. Never having scouted the property the only thing I had to go on was what I saw through the binocs the week before. Deep ravines lined both edges of the field with small points jutting out occasionally. About two thirds of the way back I clued in that I had forgotten my decoys, great. Too late to go back, I carried on almost running now as it was getting fairly light out. I finally found a spot to set up deep in the field on a point that secluded a large opening that wasn't visible from the front. I got into the cover and found a place to sit, while doing so I heard a faint gobble directly in front of me (to the east). Sounded like he was quite a ways off. By now it is fully light out. I removed my gun from its case(Remington 1100) and loaded it. Pulled out my calls and got comfortable. The same bird called again, this time I answered. I heard another bird in the ravine behind me and another to the southwest. Both of these were faint gobbles and a long way from where I was sitting. Looking directly to the east across the field there is another point that jutts out I'm thinking that that is where I should be sitting and contemplate moving but decide to be patient and stay where I am, I figured I'd get busted running across the field and then be really pissed at myself. About fifteen minutes goes by and I haven't heard the bird in front of me gobble again. The point across the field is about 1000 yards. I finally catch some movement in the field, he's directly in front of me and up until now was hidden behing the point. As quickly as he appears he's gone again hidden from view behind the point. Now I'm really wondering if I am sitting in the right spot and kicking myself for not remembering to bring my decoys but to late to do anything. I give a few clucks on my call and he answers before I get the last cluck out. He reappears from behing the point in full strut looking directly at me, amazzzzinnngggg. I think my heart skipped a beat and then started to race. Up until this point I've only been fortunate enough to have harvested a jake in 06, and another on the opener this year. At this point I check my watch 5:45, I have to be to work for seven. Lots of time, I think to myself. I managed to slowly get the binocs and had a better look at the bird. Wow!!! By now the tom has cut the distance between us in half, gobbling, strutting and inching closer and closer. This carries on until he's about 80yds out where he decides to hang up. Great I think to myself now what do I do (remembering that I am still pretty green). I slowly reach for my call and give him a few soft clucks. It works, and he's on the move directly toward me. He comes in to about 50yds. and hangs up again. I debate whether to try and reach out for him but decide to hang in there. I'm only shooting a 2 3/4 load. I slowly reach for my call again and give him a couple more clucks. The tom slowly steps in closer and closer but is moving off to my left where the cover is thick and I wouldn't be able to take a shot. I'm now shaking like a leaf, my hearts pounding, and the tom is about 35yds off to my left behind thick cover, and I can't shoot through. To make matters worse he then starts to putt. With shaking hands I give him one last soft cluck. He turns and edges out from behind the thick cover. I think my instincts takeover from here, the gun disapears, my surroundings disapear, everthing is silent, the only thing I see is that toms head as I pull the trigger. He drops instantly. I got him. About 33yds. My first TOM 23.5lbs 1 3/8" matching spurs (limb hangers), 9 3/4" beard. Sorry for being so long winded it was a hunt I will not forget. Here's the pics... ![]() An Awesome morning. ![]() ![]() ![]() Just one more thing... A big thanks to Gooder who introduced me to turkey hunting, badgered me to go and take the course and get my license, and helped me out along the way. He also took the pics. Thanks again Gooder. |

Great looking bird, congrats! How long were those spurs? |
Political Correctness is a doctrine fostered by a delusional, illogical, liberal minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a bowel movement by the clean end

I knew Boone and Crocket scored/recorded monster bucks. Do they also do the same for turkeys?
