Well I'm just getting off afternoon shift and I've tried to sleep ,but just can't do it . I wasn't planning on hunting this morning ,but since I'm up now ,I'm going to head out and see one last time if I can take one of these freakin bird's with my bow .

I'm not making any promise's ,but if the bird's are where I took my bird last season and where I seen them last weekend ,I think I'll have a real good chance . Last Sat after getting screwed over another piece of property I came across 3 tom's and a hen ,so I'll just have to hope they're near the same spot this morning .

Wish me luck guy's

Well guy's!

I really did have a great day ,but I'm a victim of my own demise . When I got there this morning and as the sun was about to start coming up ,I had bird's gobbling everywhere from 1 side of the field to the other side ,as well as down the road . I began to call and had severel bird's replying ,I knew they were getting close ,but as of yet not seen a bird hit the field .around 6:30 am the bird's at this end of the field stopped replying all together ,but every now and then I could hear a hen cackling away ,it sounded as though she was in the field ,but unfortunately I still wasn't able to locate her exactly .After about 45 minute's of hearing nothing ,I decided to take a look from the edge of the field ,as I looked toward's the road I see a tom crossing and he busted me as I took 1 extra step toward's the field. I hear him putting and all of a sudden I see 5 more bird's running back across the road right where they had come from .I was so ticked ,my patience had failed me 1 more time and if I had just given it another 1/2 hr I'm sure I would have had some action ,because these bird's were walking in a low area in the field and that's why I couldn't see them . I decide to head toward's my truck and I heard another bird gobbling in the hardwood bush just up the road from where I was ,so I figured why not give him a try .I get to the top of the field and this bird is going off repeatedly ,I set my decoy up and start calling ,he responded almost every time I called him ,but for some reason he just wouldn't cross the road to the field I got my bird last season . Severel time's I figured he was about to cross only to get chased back into the bush by on coming car's ,usually this road is pretty quiet ,but for some reason today ,it was looking like the 400 . I'm not sure if it's what they had planted in the field ,but this season I rarely seen a bird in this field ,where last season TerryM and I seen severel bird's there on every occasion we drove by or hunted this spot ,but this season nothing . Where the bird's were last weekend and this morning ,the farmer had plowed up the field ,so I'm assuming it's the crop that these bird's didn't like .
I finally gave up around 8:30 am because nothing was working and it was beginning to get very warm ,so I called it a season and came home and went to bed .
I took my thermacell because of fearing the mosquito's ,and as I walked up the road in the dark I could hear a heavy hummmmmmm in the bush ,boy were these mosquito's ever thick in this bush and every other bush ,but I can't say enough for my thermacell because within 5 minute's I never had any of these annoying creature's around . These thermacell's really work great ,so if your a turkey hunter ,this device is a must ,it's one of the best piece's of equipment I've ever bought . They work great ,so go and get one and don't be bothered by these annoying pest's any more .

Sounds like you had a great hunt bud. There is always next year,at least thats what I keep telling myself lol)))
Your first hunt sounded like mine to a T.We called and they called back to us,all this going on for at least an hour,My patience ran out as they were just not coming in.We walked to the edge of the field and seen 4 take off in a low spot--Busted--Man we were mad.I just couldent figure these birds out--still learning alot though, but you would think after calling for over an hour at least 1 would show up <_< lol)))

Well at least you had some action. I tell ya on my last two outings I was wondering what the hell I was doing wrong because I wasn't seeing birds in proven killing spots. The only thing I could see different was alot of the fields got plowed over early and I wonder if the tractor activity pushed them deep for a while or they don't like walking on fresh ploughed ground?
OK, nows it officially the "pre season" for big game. Lets get on it :allright:

I was lucky enough to tag out this year but I've been trying to help my neighbour get his first bird.
We headed out on closing morning and hunted a very productive spot. With that heat and the fact that the bush fringed on a massive swamp, the skeeters were absolutely friggin un-believable!!. Just walking along the edge was brutal, however once we set up we both fired up the Thermo-cells. Like Nubo said, if any one was a non-believer about them actually working, trust me, they are worth their weight. As the sun came up I watched hundreds, no, friggin thousands of skeeters hovering out about 5 feet.
The bottom line,, never heard 'nary a gobble, nor saw a bird.
He's a school teacher, so we booked it in time for him to be hall monitor that morning :wow: :wow:
.. He did have his chances this past season! :bang: :bang: !, but that's another story in itself.
.. Maybe next year

Terry, you're right, too much field activity does drive them away. In the South West here they've sprayed fields weeks ago and some of the most productive areas were quiet for the last week.
Last year I shot a bird on May 25th and the field had not even been turned over yet. This year I hunted that spot on May 31st and the corn was 6-8 inches high already.
