so I'm intent on making the trek down south this spring and hunting turkeys, what do i have to start gearing up with.

ive got some of the basics, some diaphram calls, and one of the scratch ones, aluminium over glass i think it is, and i'm looking at vests and decoys now, I assume both of those are essential.

when it comes to decoys, whats the preference, from what i gather, a hen and a jake is a good combination to have, is this is a good start?

and turkey chokes, i assume I need something special for this as well?

any other essentials that Im missing out on?

also, how does licencing work, ive taken the course a few years back, but how do you go about getting a licence/tag?

thanks for any help guys.

I'm still new at turkey hunting but I really like the box call easy to use, sounds good, nice in wet condtions.

License can be bought you don't have to apply like moose or deer, once you shoot one then you can go and buy another one. (2 tags)

Just my opinion but I don't think you have to spend alot of money to get started. Camo is most important. They aren't stupid bird and expect to get burned and laugh and learn when you do lol)))

To get your first license inless your outdoors card aready has the "T" on it for the turkey course you'll need to take in the peice of paper that you got once you completed the course, Before they will sell you a license.

As for what you need to get started, it is quite simple a straight shooting shotgun with a turkey choke(prefered) increases your killing disance by abit.

Some turkey load shell whatever works the best out of your gun. Spend some money and time patterning your gun with different types of shells.

Calls whatever best suits you, Mouth calls, Box calls, Slate calls or any of the others that are on the market out there. Pactice with the calls so you can do the basic calls (fly down cackle, cluck, yelp, purr) Gobbler call this call is one that they don't suggest that you use as most hunters listen for and respone to these. Where I hunt I'm the only one that hunts the land so the risk is still there from tresspasser but is low. I've used this to locate birds in the late season with good success when nothing else will work.

Decoys are used quite often by hunters and usually a lone hen or a jake with it works good. Two many decoys can mess up the turkeys came across a guy one day that had seven out in one spot at that time if you seen three together where we hunted you were lucky.

Turkey vests are nice for carrying everything but are not nessary for hunting, I hunted for three years without one and last year bought one at Cabelas and love it would hunt with out it now.

Blinds are also nice but not nessary as sometimes you got to be able to move on birds that have turned away from you. Blinds help conceal alot of your movement just like deer hunting. Blind are nice if you are using a bow or have a kid with you.

It that time of year again already, time to get everything together and ready to hit the woods on the 25th of April. 93 day to go after today.

I also like to carry an compact set of Bino's for scanning for birds in a field and to have an idea what is answering me when calling.
