I want to pluck a whole bird this year. Do you just start plucking or is there a way to cut the fan off, i want to keep that but don't want to wreck the skin as my plan is dunking in a deep fryer?
Any helpful hints.?

If you want a nice fan you have to sacrifice about 3 or four inches around where the tail starts and finishes. We shin and deep fry lots and it doesn't hurt a thing to loose a little skin. I have deep fried skinless wild turks as well and it was mint.

If you are plucking. Just cut the fan off at the last joint. That is the way they till you to do it on the video's. This allows you to have extra feathers if you'd like to mount the fan. Still have two fans in the freezer from two years ago that I still need to take the time and mount. I've got the plaques and everything now I just need to find the time.

Don't forget to cut the beard off too. For ease of plucking dip in almost boiling pot of water for about a couple minutes then have at her. Helps to keep the fluff down and stops the pulling on the skin when you pluck. Oh yah I assume you already gutted it, if this is an obvious question forgive me. :shy:

we always pluck at least 2 of our birds to deep fry.

i would recommend removing your tail first and then start plucking.

Hang your bird by its feet at eye level and begin plucking your bird slowly. the point of hanging you bird unside down is to remove the feathers pulling DOWN on them. Work against them, you woil have better success pulling them out. Grab a bunch of feathers and do quick, short rips.

Be sure you get the full piece of the quill, that way u dont end up eating them when u deep fry your bird with the skin on.

Plucking is time consuming. Hope your not queezy about bird lice becuase you'll have them crawling all over you. Dont worry they cant live on you,,but they will try!

Have fun,

sorry i forgot one thing....timbrhuntr said to gut it...

i would highly recommend to leave the guts in. It keep the birds shape and allows for easier plucking.

thanks for the tips. I guess there is no way but to lose a bit of skin if you want the fan.
Thanks again guys for your advice.

Actually team tenpoint 2 is correct it is preferred to leave the guts in to pluck. I assumed the bird was already gutted because most field dress as soon as possible unless they are getting the bird mounted. This could be obvious. I usually have a wait before I can get the bird home to be plucked so I usually gut it before I pluck it. This seems to work well for me from experience, thats why I posted it.Just don't forget to clean out the feathers from the cavity once your done if you do gut it. Some say you should also hang by head and not the feet and pluck from the neck down.

This is why I don't post that much there is always somebody out there that will call you on what you post. Instead of just giving what works for them.

So if you gut it first it is still okay. If you don't gut it first it is still okay.If you hang by the feet it is okay and if you hang by the head that works too. Sorry if I messed you up onmedic I'll go back to just reading and keep my advice to myself.

No worries timbrhuntr. If the guys on the forum had any idea of your experience and background they would notwor notwor bow down. I wouldn't worry about TEAM TENPOINT 2's response. We got many people with different experiences and different ways of doing things as you pointed out. I hope you continue to read and post here. I don't think TEAM TENPOINT 2 purposely singled you out. We work hard here to keep the personal attacks and bull off the board and I think we do a good job. I doubt that you will find youself being called on what you post very often here. And if you do just respond like you did explaining your side. You don't have to but a little friendly debate is not unreasonable on a forum.
