My son subscribes to a magazine called "Extreme Jakes", a hunting magazine designed for kids. Anyhow, it says the MNR is launching a special spring season for youths, the date is yet to be announced for Ontario.
Most Provence's (as well as many states) are doing this, what makes Ontario different is that the hunt is not limited to bearded turkeys, looks like hens are going to be fair game too.
What an excellent way to introduce kids to a sport, give them their own season and at the same time start cutting down the numbers of the hens.
I highly doubt they will interrupt the normal season to do this, so it looks like our MNR has found a way to reduce numbers, introduce kids to a sport all at the same time. Bravo!

with the apprentice program your kids can hunt birds when they are 12 as long as they pass the hunter safety and turkey course and then use your tag.
Not sure if i like the idea of the hen shooting though

The turkey course does not appear to be a requirement for this, but the hunting course is. I think it is more of a way to get people to introduce kids to hunting while at the same time reducing the explosion of hens we have experienced over the past couple years.
It also looks like the kids will be entitled to their own tags.

hmmm thats interesting then, i know now if you go out with an apprentice they have to take the turkey class.
Not sure when they would make it best for the kids, normally cold the first week or so, heck when my son shot his turkey there was still frost on the ground and that was May 24.
A 1 week season in September for kids would be an idea, that way your not messing with a hen and her nest and the weather is a little nicer for the kids.
