I notice in a lot of the pics I've seen and a lot of the shows I've watched that a lot of guys seem to hunt meadows/clear areas near the woods. What are the chances of getting a bird in hardwoods (the kind where you can see a long way). Or do they prefer the wider open areas as opposed to more heavily wooded areas?

they travel all day long moving from roost area to food and then back to a roost area. if you find a spot that has a roosting tree you might be in luck within your hardwoods.
I think more birds are shot in open areas but enough birds are shot every year in the hardwood bush

Same here. I've shot a lot of birds in the hardwoods. You will find open woods even better after the field edges have had hunting pressure. The tops of the ridges ,where the toms can see a ways can be especially good.

Open hardwoods are great , not alot of underbrush and like was said before the gobbler can see a long was...........ridges make great strut zones.......from my experience the only type of cover birds don't like is thick undergrowth because it limits their ability to see.

The hardwood spot I have in mind is a big long ridge that has a thick cedar swamp at the bottom of the one side, and an open corn (cut) field on the other. Definatley gonna set up the blind there.

I agree it doesn't matter ,if you can get in the middle of their roosting area and the food source your gonna bag a bird .

Where ever you can find a gobbling bird is a good place to try just might not always work.
