Any suggestions for a guy just getting into turkey hunting?

Do I go with a hen, a hen and tom, or both?

Need help here guys!

Buy at lease a pair to begin with, you can always buy another at a later date.

I go with a two hens and jake. The hens all have a 50 yard string attached to the bottom of their necks - so I can pull them down towards the ground as if to feed or I swing them from left to right when the winds blowing. I've had deer inspect from a few feet becuase they looked and moved so life-like.

The sponge cheapos will do.

I like the string idea........brilliant! Gives 'em some life like movement I guess.

I also use 2 hen decoys and a jake decoy. The only thing I can say is the first decoy I bought was the foam decoy and the next 2 were rubber. The foam decoy only lasted about 1.5 years and then the staples tore out and the stake wouldn't stay in. Also the foam decoy seemed to lose it's shape over time and I had to stuff the tail with newspaper to keep it looking proper. Just make sure the decoys that you buy are durable as they will be folded up in your pack etc when walking to and from your spot. Good Luck hunting

Go collapsible, and even if you have to put a pink scarf on the jake if thats what you get, cover the extreme red that they come with. That is if you ever want to shoot a jake.

I have a hen and a jake decoy. Had great success with it. Had deer and coyotes less then 10 yards away from them and many gobblers have met their demise from them. The jake decoy has quite a few holes in him from a gang of toms laying a beatdown on him while i'm trying to coax in the big one LOL

Mine just sit on the stick and move ever so slightly with a very calm wind. Looks like they are walking from a distance, they swing a bit too. I don't think you need one that bobs its head or is an actual turkey mount. Mine are just cheap ones that i bought for $20 a pop about 5 years ago.
