so went out today to pattern my gun, shooting Hevi Shot 3 1/2" #5's out of my 870 with a Tru Glo Gobble Stopper choke tube.

Here are a couple photos, one at 25 yards, 40, 50, and a stretch at 65, just curious to see what it was like, what a long bomb though, dont know how youd see the turkeys head.

the one at 40 yards, doesnt have many pellets in the head, but I think I may have been off a touch on that one, as theres a denser collection of pellets to the left of the target. I think the one at 50 actually looks better than the one at 40, so I think it was likely me, as I was shooting kneeling down, not rested on anything stable.

and at 65 I was actualy impressed at how many were on the paper, dont know if it would be lethal, and dont think I would try, but it looks alright, it looks like the pattern hit a little low, but still a decent grouping for that kind of outrageous range!

expensive target practice, at almost 4 bucks a pop though!

Nice job. Does the turkey choke tube you have make it like an extra, extra full choke?
Political Correctness is a doctrine fostered by a delusional, illogical, liberal minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a bowel movement by the clean end

looks like 30 yards might be the max for that set up, don;t like the 40 yard count, you tried any other loads?

here's the specs from bass pro;

The TruGloŽ Gobble-Stopper Xtreme Choke Tube Series is precision machined of high grade steel and specifically adapted for different types of gun models (see chart below). Features tighter patterns and extended range. Accepts all turkey loads, including Hevi Shot. Wrench-free installation (although a final tightening with a choke tube wrench is recommended to prevent the choke tube from loosening while shooting). Ported to reduce felt recoil and reduce muzzle jump. Endorsed by the National Wild Turkey Federation. .665 choke diamater.

If it was me i would try a couple other different loads. Your pattern at 25 yards it good except its a little high and too the left. I think the quoted number is 17 pellets in the head and spine for a sure kill.

I havent tried anything else, I got these at gander mountain a couple weeks back, I thought I was getting the best there was, but may have to keep looking for something better.

for the price of the stinking things, i expected better results!

It depends on the gun as to what load it likes the most. Just like in rifles a shotgun will have a load that groups the best. The same principle applies and some loads will pattern better then other loads out of your gun. You could leave it at that and aim for the base of the neck at 30 yards but you had better either change your loads or make sure you dont shoot out past 30 casue you will more then likely loose the bird.

Try the Whichester supremes they have worked well for me over the last couple of years in different guns that I have used. With both just a full choke and and undertaker choke tube. I thought they always said 7 pellets to the head and neck area would kill a turkey, not sure through. Maybe I'm daydreaming again.

find someone else who is trying to do the same thing, buy a box each of different brands and trade half of them. Once your set up theres no stopping you.

Tom,
If you are going to try more shells I shoot an 870 also and have always used Remington duplex loads. They are a combinantion of #4's and #6's. They worked great out of my gun.
I haven't had to buy them lately since I moved to T-Bay so I am not sure if they still make them. I think it would be worth a try as I seem to remember they were about $15.00 a box of 10.

Try the Federal #6 flight control wads. I use them religously out of my 870, which has an extra full choke. It may be the ticket for you. Your pattern looks good but I wouldn't go past 30 yrads IMHO.
I don't always chase tail, but when I do; its whitetail. Stay camo my friends.
