I had once heard that deep snow wears the turkeys beard down. Last year we did not have alot of snow and everyone was getting birds with lengthy beards, this year may be different with the deeper snow we had.
Any truth to this?

Yea,

The snow and ice build up on the beards wile the birds are feeding. They can break off with the added weight.I also think its called beard rot.

FYI the CWS use to band Canada geese by ataching colars around their necks. They found that the ice build up was killing the birds.

Beard rot is actually caused by a lack of Mellanin in the beard, snow or other outside factors do not play a part in beard rot..........

longbuster is right about the melanin...but all factors do play a role in beard length and thickness..
