What sort of info can we provide turkey hunters who plan on using a crossbow or a bow? I would imagine there are certainly a few differences in comparison to using a shotgun. For example, what are the chances in getting a swift second shot on a bird when the first one is a miss?

I would say that the chances of getting a second shot on a bird with a bow or crossbow are next to none. It takes alot of movement to re-cock the crossbow to re-load and getting another arrow and drawing a bow. Which also takes alot of time.

I missed a nice tom last spring because he caught me drawing my bow from inside the edge of a cedar bush.. There was 3 of them at about 15 yards in front of me and as soon as one of them caught the movement, they they were gone. Even if shooting at one from a blind, the noise of the crossbow alone not to mention the noise of the arrow in flight would spook them if you missed.

If memory serves me someone posted a where to shoot a turkey anatomy chart last season. Maybe we could find that and repost it. As far as a second shot like Lonewolf said not much chance.

Here's a helpful link for arrow placement and other concerns regarding the harvest of a turkey with a bow.

I as well missed my 2nd TOM during the 2006 season with my crossbow. I had him beat, but didnt see a small black cherry branch and my bolt deflected mere inches in front of the bird. Clean miss and if your thinking about getting a 2nd shot in...hahahah good luck!!! That TOM was puttin at me a hundred yards away in the blink of an eye.

ITS FUNNY HOW A BIRD WITH A BRAIN THE SIZE OF A PEA, CONTINUES TO OUT SMART ME TIME AND TIME AGAIN!...I LOVE SPRING GOBBLERS.
