Yeah, I got busted more than once before I finally bagged one. The toughest thing is to wait long enough when they come in silent. |

...on my very first hunt...scouted out a spot in a feild i knew the bird's traveled...thought i picked a good spot...was just getting light out ..i really had no idea what to expect...well when that old tom sounded off in the tree next to the one i was under i almost soiled myself... ...any way he see me i guess when i almost jumped out of my skin... ...well that morning was a bust he flew out the other way ...well...next weekend i changed spot's set up about 60-70 yard's from the first set up ...thinken i should be a good distance away...well i guess the bird's musta thought the same ....this time i was rite under them...again i was busted they flew off in the opposite direction....no bird's for me that year....the next year different farm...i have learned to call alittle better...i'm sitting in a good spot i think ..get set up and start calling...well not long and i hear a snap behind me....hearing all kind's of story's about coyote's sneaking up on the caller's ..i think this noise is to loud or big for a turkey to make....spin around to see a turkey about 10' from me ...again the turkey disapear's really quick no shot....wasn't till my 3-4year that i finally connected....was set up in a blind and with the help of my hunting buddy called the bird in from a couple hundred yard's away......Good luck!!! I have been busted too many times to count. It happens but you live and learn from your mistakes. |

Killed my first bird the first year out, But I had been busted the day before by turkys on the same ranch. While hunting turkeys I think it is pretty much impossible to not get busted at some point each year. Matt |

Opening morning of my first ever turkey hunt, 4 years ago, all went perfect, morning came, gave a few calls, he gobbled flew down, shot him at 12 yards. Thought turkey hunting was a snap, easiest hunt i've ever done. year two, not even a shot. Year 3 two birds. Year 4, tried like heck to get one with a bow, no go, ate two tags. Got busted all over the place trying to draw on them. Year 5, i'll let you know, using a blind and the bow. Scouting hasn't turned up much so far this year. Alot of woods that i hunt are not wintering woods, just depends on when they show. So far nothing, and its getting close. Alot of my areas are complete swamps right now. If history repeats itself, they won't show till things dry up. Good luck, its a blast. Bryan |

Well I guess I am going to be busted a few times this year because I plan to be out in the morning and in the evening when I am not at work. The couple of spots I have permission to hunt,I have seen lots of birds there all winter long and yes it seems like they have vanished.I think everybody is basicly seeing the same thing. |

yeah the birds tend to "yard up" in the winter and then disperse once the warm weather hits, all them toms want their own piece of property to call home. The good thing about being out there in the evenings is you can watch where the birds are heading for roost so you can set up along their travel route in the morning, also in the same end you can set up where they are going. Sounds like you'll have lots of time to either get busted or to enjoy the great outdoors |

I have certainly put the time, money and efford into it.I know its not going to be an easy hunt as I still have lots to learn.I just want some kind of success.Hey,I hunted deer this year for the first time, again alot of money and time involved but I did get a doe.I called that a success.I cant wait to get out at the turkeys as I am counting the days down and Im like a kid on Christmas day. |

Getting busted by wild turkeys happens a lot. On my first ever hunt for wild turkeys I think me and Deb got busted two or three times. I really remember the first time well though. It was my first hunt for turkeys ever. I could hear the gobblers sounding off in a few different directions. It was magical. There was me Deb and my friend Glenn. We had a decoy spread out and had birds fly down to the opposite side of the field were set up on. It took awhile but a group of 9-10 hens and 3 Toms worked towards us. I was uncomfortable against the tree and refused to move but I was almost screeming discomfort and pain. I learned something about being comfortable right there. Anyway, the Toms ended seeing something they didn't like and exited at about 70 yards. The Hens came right into the decoys and milled around for awhile then continued on. Good luck! |

I agree with Dobber, if you don't get busted a few times you just aren't trying. If you are really hunting and getting them close they will bust you. That is half the fun of hunting them though. If it was too easy they would call it grocery shopping! You have to learn to enjoy the interactions with the birds and every so often you might get to shoot one.
