So my buddy and I took out first crack at turkey hunting this morning, and were both back at the camp by 8am. I shot what I would call a big tom, and my buddy shot a smaller jake. Intense!!!!!!! I'm still vibrating with excitemet. Got lots of pics, but I didnt bring the hose to connect my camera to the computer, have to wait til I get home Wednesday for some pictures, and some more details
so last night I loaded up a couple photos onto the computer, found a computer with a slot for the SD card. I only got some from yesterday, not today yet, those'll have to wait.

Today was another great day, 17 minutes after legal light I shot another good sized gobbler. Was pretty neat, he was gobbling on the roost before first light, then right at legal light he flew down and landed at the far end of the field I was in. Took just over 15 minutes, and a bit of soft calling, and he worked right in. As he got to my decoy a hen flew down and landed right by him too. He wasn't paying any attention to my two hen decoys or the real deal hen, he was pretty worked up about my jake decoy. Kept gobbling at it, and strutting, and waving his tail in its face, dragging his wings, was pretty wild to watch, after a couple minutes of that I got a good bead on him and dropped him at about 40 yards. The whole time he was doing this two jakes and another hen stood about 50 yards off and watched. after I shot him they all ran around in circles for a second, then came in to investigate what was going on, checked out my decoys, checked out the dead bird, and the jakes came within about 25 yards of me. Then the Toms reflexes kicked in and his legs started kicking and they all beetled out of there, pretty neat.

He was a touch smaller than yesterdays, but still seemed to me to be a mature gobbler. He weighed in at 21 lbs, with spurs about 1 and 3/8", but had a longer beard, it was 9.5"
Below is a picture of my tom from yesterday; 22lbs, 1.5" spurs, and a 9" beard.

Well, it was an interesting morning to say the least. 3 of us go out to a spot that held a bunch of turkeys just yesterday. We heard no gobbling at all, so the 2 other guys decide to set up and I walk listening for birds. I walked about half an hour and founs a dust bowl. I decided that would be a good place to call from. SO I set striker to slate and not 50 yards behind me a turkey sounds off.....I'm in business. I sit down, or should I say dive for cover. He gobbles twice more and not 2 minutes later 2 jakes come running out. I shot the bigger of the 2 in the back of his head as he ran straight past me. Never knew what hit him.

I decided to walk around so I didn't disturb my buddies' spots. I went and sat down for a while and started to doze off. We were to meet at 9:00. I have no patience so I walked out at 8:30. One friend had got busted, we talked for a bit before gong to get the other guy, who is his father in law. 70 years old and trying to get his first turkey. We walked out to his set up and low and behold we spook 4 toms that were working their way up to his decoys. We felt lower than a snake's belly. He was about to shoot his first turkey and we blew it for him. That's life, I guess. All in the fun of opening day. I LOVE TURKEY HUNTING!

Getting up at 3 am was not my idea of fun, but it all turned out great woohoo . Northerner and myself showed up at the farm at 4:30 and proceeded to out designated blinds. At first there was only one gobble at a distance. As the sun rose I looked up and saw 7 turkey roosting in a tree about 100 yards away from me. I thought I was in trouble because I set up decoys with my flashlight on in plain view of the turkeys. As dawn approached, the real gobbling started. It sounded like there were 100 gobblers around us. Most of them between me and northerner. I watched the 7 roosted turkeys fly down one at a time. Once they were down I tried my new GobbleStalker box call. The turkeys went crazy with it. At each noise the turkeys sounded off. I patiently waited, I tried the call again and again they responded , I heard a couple gobbles getting closer. Finally I saw 2 turkeys approaching my set-up. They were both Jakes but I wasn't holding back, when they got to 15 yards I let one of them have it. He dropped on the spot. The second one ran to the middle of the field then flew off to the next field. Once I was sure mine wasn't going anywhere I took a look at the next field and I saw at least 20 red heads. They were all over the place, but when they saw me they took off. Here are a few pics of the morning's events. Thanks GobbleStalker for the box-call, it did the trick.
