I had a phone conversation last night with one of the farmers where I do my turkey hunting, and some deer hunting and he told me that he had seen them two big toms again in a different field for the past 2 mornings. So I went out this morning and set myself up on this field with my bobble head hen by 4:30 am. Wouldn't you know it I hear the first gobble at 5:05 but the gobbling was coming from the field that I was hunting where the farmers had been seeing them regularly, which is two fields over. They were gobbling their heads off, and the gobbling was still going on at 6:00. So after thinking about it for a few minutes I decided to take a walk following a treeline to get over where all the action was coming from.

I get to the field where I figured all the ruckus was coming from and sure enough, there's the two big toms and a hen about 200 yards across the field right where I would have been if I would have went to my regular spot where I shot the jake on opening day. Knowing that I didn't have enough cover on the treeline to sneak up on them, there was no way I could close the distance without them seeing me. So I sat on the treeline for about 15 minutes and tried to call them away from the hen, but there was no way they were leaving her to come and look for a hen they could not see. So not wanting to scare them away, I just went back to my spot kicking my arse all the way back to where I was set up until about 9:30 and decided to pack it in. I'm going back tomorrow morning and I guess I will be setting up in my regular spot again. With my luck they will be in the field I was in this morning. Would it ever be nice if we could be at two places at the same time.

I feel your pain!!! I've been chasing the same bad boy since last season and still
he eludes me. It's driving me nuts! No pattern, no roust that is the same from
day to day, he's all over the place. What a butthead of a bird, just thinking about it
makes me itchy to get out and try to out smart him.

Good luck with yours!

It sure is driving me up the wall.

I'm sure this is a tom I missed last year after getting busted and my arrow flew just over his back as I hurried on the shot. There was two together that time, and it seems like they are always together from what the farmers tell me.

I should have just quit while I was ahead, as I hate eating tags. But there's still two weeks left to the season, so there's still time for me to stick one. First one to come into bow range gets it, I don't care if it's a jake or not. However, I would much rather get myself a tom. I now have 3 wild turkey under my belt since I've stated hunting turkeys, and they're all jakes.

Gotta hit the sack now cause 2:30 comes fast!

Hey Lonewolf...I'm having the same problem. I'm playing musical ground blinds right now, so I've decided to forget my blinds that have chairs in them and resort to sitting on the ground, hoping it is a good spot.

I just got out of the turkey woods and what a morning.I got in there way before daylight not knowing where I was going to setup or where the birds might be roosting.Just before daylight I got a ear ringing with the hens clucking in the tree next too me.I was totally surprized that I setup that close. The gobbler didnt seemed to be in the tree with them as I could hear him calling back to the hens from a distance.I think they saw me and took off.

I went out last night with a buddy who still has a tag left. Managed to see 1 hen and heard another.

I just got a pm from one of the moderators who lives in the same area where I hunt turkeys, and he told me he saw one of them monster gobblers I've been talking about at 10:30 this morning in one of the fields I"ve been hunting. I guess I wasn't hunting late enough as I was always leaving around 9:00 - 9:30. I won't be doing any hunting this weekend, but come Monday morning I'll be sure to be back out there, and I'll try to stay longer from now on. That's where I'm going wrong.

I think I'm making the same mistake. I usually pack it in by 9.30 if I'm not getting any action.

From what people have been saying the hens are coming back into the fields around 10 am and staying there till around 11am in our area anyway. I've been traveling the roads a little and that is what I am seeing also. The birds have gone from the area that I hunt. They have followed the hens to an area where no one is allowed to hunt and they are staying there. No amount of calling will get them out. I find the birds are not patterning at all. They are moving around big time and are very hard to set up on.

The birds in this area appear to be spending most of the time in the woods. One hen crosses the field every morning around 6:15-6:30 and crosses the field, she will come back any time from 6;30 - 8:30 P.M.Last week, three toms joined up.Yesterday they crossed the field at 9:30 A.M. but came back at 10 A.M. and entered the woods.Today, I saw them at 9:00 A.m..I'm waiting to see when they come back.Maybe, you should try an opening in the woods.Lots of instects out now.Brent J..
