Well I've only been out 3 times this season (by choice). Just haven't been feeling the turkey hunt this year. Heard some gobbles near the opener then second and third time out I didn't see or hear anything and the sign was non-existent. I was out for 2-3 hrs and did some light calling this evening. I managed to drag a jake in, but he was quiet, no strutting or gobbling and he caught me by surprise and started to putt and make tracks. I couldn't get the gun up in time. At least they are around which is good news. |

Well I was 20 yards and one stupid hen away from drop kicking a gobbler. A couple gobblers were henned up bad, but I didn't know it until I crawled to the field and almost got busted. I waited for them to leave the field and high tailed it through the bush to get in front of them. Just as I was coming up to the cross-section where I was going to plop myself down the hen poked through and caught me, she was dragging the gobblers around. I knelt down but she was onto me. I made my way to the field and they were still about, but out of range. Heard one putting in the bush beside me, but couldn't make it out. Bah, turkeys. |

LOL... Yep, this turkey hunting thing can be pretty frustrating at times. They sure had me frustrated yesterday morning. |

Bah jakes! Saw one at the field edge and called lightly to him. He had a dust bath then made his way over to my hen decoy. I guess he realized that it wasn't the decoy making the sound so he made his way toward me in the bush. Unfortunately he was off the wrong shoulder, but I purred him into about 5 yards hoping he'd cross in front. He got a bit too close though...I could see him blink. He went back out the other way when he figured things out. I had the safety off and him in the sights and almost squeezed one off at him twice, but there was too much brush in the way. Lots of deer out though, the fawns look good. The bugs are another story! Saw a few deer just laying in the fields to get away from them. One deer was right into my turkey calls too, called him into 10 yards and another mother was teaching her fawns what a hunter smelled like and snorted up a storm. Nice to be out aside from the heat and bugs! |
