Well, friday started off with a hen comin' into my setup right off the roost with a nice gobbler in tow. Everything seemed to be goin' right as planned untill the birds reached the fencerow I was set up on and the hen came through but the tom held up and I lost sight of him. He obviously didn't like something about my set up 'cause he never followed the hen through the fencerow. The hen seemed quite content to feed with my lone hen decoy. She actually hung around for about 45 mins. Just as she was leaving I heard a gobble about 200 yds behind me and every 10mins or so there would be another gobble and it was gettin' closer. I began callin' loudly in his general direction and after a couple mins, he'd gobble gettin' closer. After about 45 mins 2 Toms appeared across the field from me. It took them about 5mins to cut the gap to the fencerow I was in and I realized they were goin' to slip through behind my set up so I opened another side window in the goundblind and positioned the video camera looking out the side window. To make a long story short, the 2 birds hung up for about 10 - 15 mins at 30 to 40 yds just wondering why this lone hen wasn't responding to there gobbling. I finally couldn't take it anymore and really fired up the callin' and they would cut me off everytime!!!!! The one Tom was starting to make a move away from me so I made the executive decision to make a move and try to nail one with the 125 grn Magnus Bullhead on the end of my arrow. Unfortuneately for the video I had to step infront of the camera and stick the front half of my bow out of the window so you can't see the shot on video, but you can defineatly hear the impact from 33yds away!!!! Before I shot I had ranged him at 33yds, came to fulldraw, moved infront of the camera and settled my 30 yd pin just right of his melon (after making several test shots with this set up, I knew the arrow flight was good at 30yds, it just drifts left about 2 inches at that range) when I squeezed the release and watched the arrow buckle his neck and the bird dropped on the spot, I truely was in aw!!!!!! What a feelin'!! The other bird just stood there and came back to see what happened to his buddy! I thought he was goin' to stomp him but he never got closer than a few yds away from his fallen pal!! I eventually ran him off and ran to claim my trophy!!!

Oh, did I mention he had 2 beards!!!! woohoo

Here's his stats.
23.4 lbs
1 1/8 spurs
1st beard 9 5/8
2nd beard identical 9 5/8!!!!

Equipment.
Mathews Outback at 57lbs
Magnus 125grain Bullhead
Trophyridge 5pin matrix sight

Made it out 3 more time's since my last post with my boy with 1 of them being and evening shoot. Headed out to 1 of my spots where i've been seeing a huge tom hanging out regular to try and put my son on his 1'st bird, with no time for scouting I did'nt know this birds pattern other then he was always in the 1 wheat field so it was a long shot. Seen him and 7 other bird's that I was'nt sure what they were but had no interest in the calls. Got out again this past Sat. morning but we HAD to be out of the wood's by 11 for an appointment which screwed thing's BIGTIME. Set up on the field edge with atleast 4 birds sounding off, had 2 toms enter the field dancing for us and 8 hens. I called agressively hoping to bring the hens over and have the toms follow which worked somewhat. All the hens came over and started too feed anywhere's from 4 yrd's to 15 yrd's from us but the toms would not come any closer then 65 yrd's. This went on for about an hour and we just watched them leave the area or so we thought. 10 am role's around and I tell the boy i'm gonna check the fields and if I don't see anything we're outa here. Get about 3/4's of the way to the vehicle and I catch movement in the wheat, sure enough it's the big boy and he's slowly working his way up the fence line, so I tell my son to sit up against the fence post and just listen to me on what to do because I could see the bird's every move. He would parascope everynow and then but was still comming but it was taking along time. Assoon as he got to about 75 yrds I told him to get the gun up and be ready. 20 min's goes by and he's maybe come another 10 yrds and the watch now say's 11:11....S%$T time to go and the bird was spooked...OHWELL....Had to be in Hamilton by noon!
Made it out again this past Mon. with 3 sounding off on the roost so I started to call softly to them and then did a flydown cackle, around 6:15 am I catch some movement about 30 yrd's from us and told him to slowly get the gun up and pointed to my side of the tree, sure enough 2 jakes and there comming right to the hen decoy, by this time i'm grinning ear to ear because he's gonna get his 1'st. Told him to wait for them to seperate and then told him to shoot the 1 on the right.BOOOOOOM!!! Smile gone because he missed and I just looked at him and asked how did you miss that. 11 yrds and we watched the bird run away. He patterned that gun and it was on bigtime and I am really confused as to why he missed, told me he was'nt excited but I call BULL because I could here him breathing heavy. Try again this Sat
Well NO bird this AM but we should have had one. Very eventfull morning with atleast 7 birds sounding off on the roost. On our first setup we had atleast 9 deer pass through and had 2 yote's show themselve's with one that should have been dead at 15 yrd's but with the bird's gobblin I told the boy not to shoot and I stood up to scare it away, did'nt want to screw the hunt up. A short time later we had a jake come through at about 45 yrds through the thick stuff not giving us a clear shot and just watched him walk away. We got up to make another move and when doing so a bird started up and went nonstop so we hurried to get closer and setup, took about a 1/2 hr and he was commited and on his way, at 55 yrds I seen the tom in full strut searching for us and told the boy to get his gun up and told him where to point it and said to stay still. Still comming and the boy decided that he needed to adjust his butt and we were busted at about 45 yrds . If he only sat still another min if not less he would have had his shot at 30 yrds or under. Got more birds fired up about 20 mins after the spooked bird but would not commit so we snuck up to the field edge to see 3 toms in the field dancing to a hen with No luck. Gonna try to get out next Sat. for the last day of our season but I highly doubt it because we're moving.

This morning I had plans on hunting all day if needed as the longbeards lately seemed content staying on the properties bordering the one I was on and only jakes would come out to play. I knew it would come down to a game of patience and fortunately I have plenty!

The gobbling started in front of me at 4:40am, picked up intensity around 5:15am, then everything went quiet. The only gobbling could be heard on the other side of the property behind me. I would hunt that bird later if needed!

Every once in awhile I would do some clucks, purrs and soft yelps hoping to get a gobble in front of me, nothing?? I had put one bobb'n head hen decoy in front of me in a recently plowed field in the darkness and hoped it would draw in a lonesome gobbler.

It was quite breezy and cool this morning, so after a calling sequence, I tucked my cold hands into my vest and settled in for possibly a long wait. It was currently 6:15am and I hoped some turkeys would come out into the fields as the morning wore on.

At 6:25am, I was daydreaming when I thought I heard a turkey purr! Then I heard it again! Past experiences has taught me to react quickly in case a turkey had sneeked in on my set-up, so I quickly scanned the landscape while quietly taking the safety off my gun. I no sooner had done that when off to my left a longbeard appeared and went into strut, 30 yards out and put on a show for my hen decoy! While I slowly got the gun up, 2 hens popped up in the long grass between me and the gobbler! It was their purrs that tipped their hand and put me in the drivers seat!

I let the longbeard strut up towards my decoy, then gave him a few clucks to get his head up. No go, so I clucked again and again and again! Finally the head came up and I stroked the trigger. The gobbler went down at 6:30am and my season is over!

Keith Beasley #2
Keith finally filled his last tag this morning on a nice tom at 8:30am. It was a long hard struggle to get him in range and required repositioning a couple times but we got him.

this bird has only one spur (same as my second bird this year). Haven't measured it yet but it looks like the spur will be just over the inch mark and beard in the 9-9.5 inch range.
