Got out this morning and a beautful morning it was turkey hunting.Got setup and had a gobbler doing his thing just as daylight.I thought he may come in close but all I got were hens coming to the decoys.I have been having this kinda luck lately.Lots of gobbling but all I get to the decoys are hens.On two different occasions this morning I had a hen come to the decoys but no tom.He dont seen to far away either according to his gobbling but I cant get him to come in. |

Try adding a jake decoy in your set. If you already do have one then try taking it out. |

I am so upset with myself right now,I know I wont sleep tonight.I left this morning around 10-11 Oclock after I made this original post.I went to a spot where I have seen a huge tom a few times but he would never come close enough for a shot.I look out the field and there is no birds in the field so I get out of my car and proceed to the field to put out my hen decoy,I broke the peg on my jake.I was out in the field putting the decoy out and when i turned around about appox 100 yards I see a big fan.I scooted in the woods as fast as I could and i thought for sure I was busted.I was there about 2 hours and he would come no closer than 60-70 yrs.Anyways in was windy and after 2 hours with no termacell I was getting eat alive and decided to move in with the blowing of the wind.I got within 5,yes 5 yards of the big tom and could of had a shot but wanted a better shot as there were a few branches in my lane.Im sure I could of killed that bird. What a mistake as the 2 hens that was with him spotted me.I waited for the perfect shot when I am sure I could have had my tom, right in the middle of the afternoon.Im actually embarrased.Ive tried to get this bird a few times now and this is twice the flies have almost carried me away.Back to work tommorrow for 4 days and next wed, thurs and friday will be my final crack at it.All hens this morning also, wow what a day, very dissapointed. |

Now don"t be embarrased and I know it can make you feel sicky for awhile. One of our hunting buddies has missed three times twice with his crossbow and after the second miss he said if he only had a gun well the third time he had a gun and he missed then too he didn"t sight in properly too excited I guess. This guy gets a turkey every year and he is totally shaking his head. We have seen lots of hens but not one jake the whole season. |

Don't ever feel stupid about not shooting if your not sure it's going to be a clean kill. I have shot over 20 gobblers and have only wounded one in my life. This last Wednesday I had one hang up about 40 yards out. I kept telling myself to wait but after a half hour of this I talked myself into shooting it. My 3 1/2'' patterns very well at 40 yards and is decent even out around 50 but I have always maintained a standard of only shooting if the bird is under 35 yards. I shot and the bird was hit very hard. He managed to get up and run over a hill before I could shoot again . The last I seen him he was running into the woods about 100 yards away. I felt like crap. Not because I didn't get him but because I had hit him and couldn't recover him. I later paced it off at 48 yards. That is just too far and a misjudgement on my part. So never feel bad that you didn't shoot if you weren't quite sure because I am sorry I ever took that stupid shot and will not do that again. |

Oh I will be back there on wed, thurs and fri. This time I know where I am setting up. No decoys this time.I know where they like to hang out on the field and I will be there waiting for mr.tom and his two hens this week. Im thinking about going back with the single hen again and setting her up in that exact place, only i wont be there next to my decoy I will be closer to Mr.Tom,hoping I can catch him off guard. Undecided about using a decoy this time. |

Remember though that at 5 yds you actually don't really have a pattern. It would only be a tad wider than your bore. So if you had brush in front of that tight load of shot it would have been all over the place. Usually when the brush is close to the gun you have no shot. If close to the bird sometimes you can get a shot. |
