I've been out with a few guys the last week or so doing some calling, etc. I've found the birds just aren't coming around as much as they did earlier in the season? Is this a usual thing?

The same thing is happening in my neck of the woods. They aren"t responding to our calls or decoys and we don"t seem to be able to call them out into the fields. So the best bet now is to go into the woods and ambush them being really quiet with no decoy, maybe just a few quiet calls and hope one comes your way. Thats what we are thinking we should do, this happens every year it gets harder and harder as the season progresses. It's a guessing game now. But don"t give up cause it can still happen, six more days to go.

I was thinking of setting up in the hard woods area where I go. You say to not use a decoy in the woods?

Yeah we think the Toms are decoy shy now and not quite as stupid like the beginning and they expect the decoy to come running to them like all the hens have been doing all season if you don"t use a decoy he might come in closer still kinda looking for her. Maybe someone calling down further from the shooter so the Tom will walk right on by. We are thinking we might have to resort to the woods now but where to sit is the big question cause they are just walking around in the woods all day.

We shot four gobblers this week that came into calls really well. This was on our land which has hardly been hunted. We also hunted a different area that had been hunted before and were getting results like you. They just didn't want to come to calls and were starting to show signs of being overhunted and call shy. Around here they are in the fields the first few hours of the morning but seem to disappear off the fields after that. I've seen this before in later seasons and I'm wondering if it has anything to do with the higher temperatures and the heat from the sun in open areas. On Wednesday at 2:oo pm I seen three gobblers in a field and watched them for a half hour and they never left an area that was shaded by a big pine tree. They were just laying around and feeding a little. It is definately coming to an end but if you can get into nonpressured areas it seems they are still callable.
