Call very quietly to call shy birds. Clucks and purrs, purr a lot. Rarely yelp. My 2 cents. Only call when a bird isn't responding and again us purrs. If the bird is coming shut up, when it stops purr again. Calling less is best.

Sounds like you need to be out way earlier. 5:00am at the latest. If you got busted they can see you walking in. just my two cents.

I'm no expert but I'm calling a lot more softer these days, and less frequent too.

I was out this morning and almost had a Tom close enough until he lost interest in my hen decoy. He then went on his way with a couple of hens.I think I will tape up my jake peg tonight and bring him along also tommorrow morning.Maybe he will do the trick.

The calling less theory is good if you're not sure but now is great time to have fun at times. Calling more can sometimes be the trick as well. The hens are done. They are nesting or are unbred hens. The gobblers still have thier attention but many have been broken off and will come a runnin'.

Birds are not call shy they are hunter shy. They don't all of a sudden stop responding to the sound of a hen. I believe it usually has as much to do with hunters picking the same set ups and doing the same calling. Or every time that bird responded he ended seeing a moving hunter, or that same decoy set-up, it wasn't the calling. You gotta change it up on those hard hunted birds. yes, sometimes that bird will be so pressured he will go the other way but chances are NO calling is getting him in. You gotta deer hunt him or bushwack him.

I just called in 2 nice longbeards with a couple hens this past Sunday. They were hunted hard at the feild they were always in. I went with my buddy through the thickest bush to the backside of the feild. This is from my parents property where no one is aloud and so I was calling from a whole new direction. The one bird gobbled when I hammered the call and got closer. I realized the hen was mimicking me as she got closer. clucks and purrs wouldn't kill that bird. A few minutes of cuttin' and yelpin' and he had his first longbeard.

The other thing was the final 20 mins when the birds were in the bush with us he never gobbled. Once they were in he was a strutting machine. He was just trying to show off for me and the hen he was with and knew we were both right around him. No need to gobble. The other longbeard pecked along and never strutted or gobbled but he came! For about 15mins of that time all we could hear was the hen but we knew he was still coming.

I like getting in the foliage inside the bush and forget about the blind out at the feild edge with a decoy. Mix it up. Confuse them. Make them think about doing the nasty instead of whether they are being hunted again.

Well its all over for me this season. My first turkey hunting season and got a jake on opening day.I thought it was going to be easy but found out that is wasnt that easy at all.I failed to fill my second tag.I have no doubt that I did my best but probably pasted up a couple of kill shots in order to get a better, cleaner shot.I guess a lesson learned for next year,"shoot if you get the chance".All in all it is a very exciting hunt and I cant compare a deer hunt to a turkey hunt because they are both great.Im a little upset that I didnt get both tags filled but what can you do!
I certainly had fun out in the morning hearing them gobble and getting alot closer to other wildlife than I could ever imagine. What do you do with your remaining tag once the season is over?I mean do you have to do anything with it regarding where the MNR is concerned.Someone mentioned you should be able to keep this tag for the fall,I wish!!I hope everyone has enjoyed the spring turkey hunt as much as I have!!!!
