MasterCaster So my 61 year old step dad and I came down Friday evening and roosted a flock only to have them walk away in the morning. But later that day I met a farmer when I had to ask him to haul me out of a big mud hole(thats another story), he said I could hunt his farm. I came back that afternoon and shock gobbled a bird no 60 yards away he died about 30 seconds later. I was by myself, the old man was having an afternoon nap. So using the timer on the tailgate this is the best one. ![]() Here's the old man ![]() outbackrudzz #2 Well, friday started off with a hen comin' into my setup right off the roost with a nice gobbler in tow. Everything seemed to be goin' right as planned untill the birds reached the fencerow I was set up on and the hen came through but the tom held up and I lost sight of him. He obviously didn't like something about my set up 'cause he never followed the hen through the fencerow. The hen seemed quite content to feed with my lone hen decoy. She actually hung around for about 45 mins. Just as she was leaving I heard a gobble about 200 yds behind me and every 10mins or so there would be another gobble and it was gettin' closer. I began callin' loudly in his general direction and after a couple mins, he'd gobble gettin' closer. After about 45 mins 2 Toms appeared across the field from me. It took them about 5mins to cut the gap to the fencerow I was in and I realized they were goin' to slip through behind my set up so I opened another side window in the goundblind and positioned the video camera looking out the side window. To make a long story short, the 2 birds hung up for about 10 - 15 mins at 30 to 40 yds just wondering why this lone hen wasn't responding to there gobbling. I finally couldn't take it anymore and really fired up the callin' and they would cut me off everytime!!!!! The one Tom was starting to make a move away from me so I made the executive decision to make a move and try to nail one with the 125 grn Magnus Bullhead on the end of my arrow. Unfortuneately for the video I had to step infront of the camera and stick the front half of my bow out of the window so you can't see the shot on video, but you can defineatly hear the impact from 33yds away!!!! Before I shot I had ranged him at 33yds, came to fulldraw, moved infront of the camera and settled my 30 yd pin just right of his melon (after making several test shots with this set up, I knew the arrow flight was good at 30yds, it just drifts left about 2 inches at that range) when I squeezed the release and watched the arrow buckle his neck and the bird dropped on the spot, I truely was in aw!!!!!! What a feelin'!! The other bird just stood there and came back to see what happened to his buddy! I thought he was goin' to stomp him but he never got closer than a few yds away from his fallen pal!! I eventually ran him off and ran to claim my trophy!!! Oh, did I mention he had 2 beards!!!! Here's his stats. 23.4 lbs 1 1/8 spurs 1st beard 9 5/8 2nd beard identical 9 5/8!!!! Equipment. Mathews Outback at 57lbs Magnus 125grain Bullhead Trophyridge 5pin matrix sight Trophyridge Drop Zone rest. ![]() ![]() ![]() Norfolkhunter #2 Yesterday on my way home from work I spotted a tom out strutting in one of the fields that I hunt. I quickly went home and threw on my camo and grabbed my shotgun. On the drive to the farm I had to devise a plan on how I was going to get close enough to kill the strutter. This farm consists of alot of gullies. There are two gullies that finger up into the field where the bird was strutting. I was able to conseal my movement to the back of the farm where the gullies are. I made my way up the first gully towards where I had saw the tom. The rain really started to come down too. When I reached the tip of the gully I climbed up into the brush to see if I could spot the tom. Scanning the field I eventually picked up his movement. I tried calling to him but he was still a fair distance from my setup. He would strut every once and awhile as he made his way towards the other gully. I knew I had to move if there was any chance for me to kill this bird. Back down into the gully I went and made the big swing around into the next gully. This gully has an old tractor trail that run along it. Which gave me alot of access points to the field that the tom was in. I kept making my way up the gully in the direction that I had saw the longbeard. Every once and awhile I would pop my head out trying to spot the bird. Knowing the property quite well I moved along the gully closing the gap between me and the turkey. I caught a glimpse of him 150 yards ahead of me. So I made my last move. Down into the gully again I moved closer until I felt I was within 75 yards where I felt I would be able to call to him effectively. Climbing out of the gully and belly crawling through the soaking grass I made my way to the field edge. All of a sudden I caught movement 60 yards away. As slowly as I could I sat down and peered over the grass infront of me. There were two hens out in the field but no tom to be seen. I figured that was the last of my movement so I made a few calls. The hens answered with a few purrs and started heading in my direction. Just over a little knoll I could see the tips of a fan as it crested the hill. The love sick tom was not letting those hens out of his sight. As long as the hens stayed on the same path I would get a shot. The hens walked from my right to my left at 20 yards. With the toms attention on the hens he kept walking right into my shooting lane at a mere 30 yards. A few cluck and the click of the safety. Put an end to this exciting stalk on a rainy day turkey hunt. I was soaked but I believe the rain helped in my success. 22lbs. 10" beard and 1" spurs. ![]() Devin Love2Hunt Let me say the experience was awesome, loved every minute of it. Specially enjoyed the company..Thanks Terry.. Hope to hunt with you again sometime.. It all started at 1am in the morning. Waking up, showered, packed up the car and out of the door by 1:30am. On the road with now coffee.. 2:40am reach my destination, waiting for Terry. Terry arrives, pack his truck, and I buy coffees. He programs his TOMTOM, and we're on our way. We get there, and lights are out. Our host finally gets out of the door, and showes us where the turkeys were roosted, Terry picks a spot and we setup. Our host had chores to do.. heheheeh sucker... We wait, Then Terry softly calls.. He tries his sexy calls to jump start the Jakes and Toms. Finally after 15 to 20 mins, "Gobble Gobble "from behind us in the other field.. Crap, how did that happen... He must have roosted in the other field with hens. Cause He didn't come over to our calls.. Aftera while we decide to head out and walk to spot some turkeys. After walk we head over to the other field where we heard the GObble Gobble, looking for a spot to setup, and me not paying attention to Forest edges, and I always pay attention to forest edges, well, we got busted, "blbolbobllbobolb"..crap there goes a hen and either a TOM or a Jake.. . Ok..we find our spot and setup. and We call, and call and call some more.. nothing.. So we walk the fields carefully for some turkey and we head back to our host. He brings us to his uncles property. While walking to out spot, we were as they say Glassing the field" nothing. We reach out spot and setup. Terry calls, and calls.. nothing.. After a while, we pack it in. The turkeys were not responding, the whole thing is out of wack, something has screwed up the turkeys this week.., well we walk back to the farm house, and wouldn't you know it, we spots hens..damn it, no toms or jakes... crap... We drive our host back to his place, we chit chatted for a while.. We thanked our host and head back home.. Lessons I have learned: 1) be better equiped. The only thing missing was a Turkey vest with those seats attached. legs fall a sleep when you're sittting in a position for a long time, very annoying.. . 2) even tho, i didn't bag a turkey, I still had lots of fun, specially hunting with awesome company.. 3) TOMTOM is an awesome unit, need to get myself one.. 4) need to find property quick so I can fill up my tag, heck, I'll even take a jake.. Coyotechaser Well it happened!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Left the house late this morning at 0730 and headed out. Set up along the edge of a cornfield with 1 intruder jake and 1 hen. I put my back to an old bale of hay on the tree line and sat down. I called for about 45 minutes and waited.......nothing. Called some more.....nothing......no gobbles! I just happened to look way out in front of me and almost had a heart attack!! There was a Turkey about 150 yards away and coming in! I waited and waited.....heart still thumping, it got within 15 yards of me and went face to face with my jake decoy and started to strutt. It walked around the deke looking at it. I had a good bead on him but had to wait, cause he was about 2 feet from the new deke and I didn't want to hit it. He took 2 steps away from the deke, head stuck out and......BLAMMMMOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!! I cut loose with the #5, 2 oz Winchesters outta my Mossberg and it was over. He flopped about for approx 1 minute and it was over!!!!!!!!!! Shot him at 0830ish!!!!!!First bird ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It was a small one, but its huge in my books!!!! ![]() ![]() ![]() |
