Jason, Wild turkey numbers run in cycles. This year I will have to agree with you on the population is down a touch, but what I have seen is that in the last few years in this area some 3 hours away from your area, the hatch rate has been down. This has been the first year in years that I have seen a higher number of jakes in the spring. I'm sure some will be taken inh the fall season here, but I'm sure it will all work out in the end. After travelling all across Ontario last March, the snow load seem to be some what higher in this area then any other area around Ontario. I have seen a real drop in numbers in PA in the last 3 years and this year was a complete turn around and the numbers were up there. Keep in mind all the land that can not be hunted will hold flocks that can not be touched and will even keep the population to a level. Next year the hatch rate cycle will once again change all over in every area in Ontario and the USA and numbers will once again change... |

thanks for the info adrain ... i email some friends and got a reply back i have not deciverd all the info yet alot of reading but this is what i have found so far closing a area once opend A. For units opened based on criteria A, close the fall season when spring harvest falls below 200 birds for 2 consecutive years; and/or spring harvest and deer hunter sighting indices decline for 3 consecutive years; and/or if spring harvest declines ¡Ý50% in any single year. B. For units opened based on B, close fall season when spring harvest density falls below 0.4 turkeys/km2 of turkey habitat (defined as forests plus grasslands and agricultural areas within 100m of forest) in any single year. open a fall season Criteria for opening WMUs to fall hunting in Ontario: These criteria are conservative and based on overall population management objectives. However, further caution may be exercised with some WMUs such that a fall season may not be opened immediately once a WMU meets the above criteria. While Criteria A does not consider the size of management units, and therefore harvest density could be low even at high harvest levels, a population that can sustain a male harvest of ¡Ý200 A. Spring turkey harvests within the management unit ¡Ý200 birds in each of the preceding 3 consecutive years, or 3 out of 4 years; or B. Harvest density >0.4 turkeys/km2 of turkey habitat for 3 consecutive years. alot of talk ... im still reading ... i will post more stuff as i understand it .... |
