Yes but could you say that the # of Toms is down and Hens are up. Or that there are so many hens that the Toms don't work into calling because they have hens all around them.. Sort of like a bad tom:hen ratio.. I say this because last year half of the season in our area was a bust. You would see hens everywhere and even call them in but there would be no toms or the toms didn't want to respond.. Just a thought |

Interesting. Obviously there are plenty of birds out there but hunter numbers is fast becoming an issue. Hopefully if this trend continues our ministry will look at ways to overcome this and do it in a way that keeps hunters hunting and birds flourishing. Do we really need a fall hunt? |

I believe what you are seeing is the effect now from the 2 Gobbler tags in the Spring. When cycles run up and down over years, the population of gobblers are going to have a low at some point. Along with a few bad years of hatch rates it will clearly show and this could be the numbers you are seeing. Then you also have farmers like in my area that spent the winter killing hundreds of birds in silage areas. I have heard of 3 different farmers that shot over the 200 mark in birds. This will create a very fast impact on populations in areas and these sort of acts should be controlled. If the birds become a problem call in the NWTF and trap some of them.... |

This isn't the first time I read about farmers having to shoot birds in winter, and in large quatities. Darn shame really but I also understand the farmer has to protect his livlihood wether its a coyote eating sheep or turkeys eating silage. Makes you wonder why they don't setup a system where licensed hunters can go in and do the culling of those birds. And really how many get shot that nobody hears about? |

I personally think that very few people actually report their harvested birds. In fact Im sure that half or less report. I know that since they cancelled the weigh in staions our harvest reports are not even close to what was taken. Im sure that the success rates are out to lunch. IMHO. We need the weigh in staions for proper harvest reports and measurements. There are farmers and others that are taking birds out of season but I don't think they acount for too many birds. I just believe that the way the MNR collects their harvest reports can be much better. |

not only did the reporting of birds become less with this new system but the amount of 25# birds increased dramatically

Sorry guys are you kidding me.. Although I agree that alot go unreported, can it get any easier then picking up your phone or even the cell phone that is probably in your turkey vest versus driving to a weigh station that for some is to far to drive to, not to mention the price of gas.. |

Im not saying that it's hard to report via the phone. Im just saying there is alot who dont phone in. Im trying to point out that its not working. Hunters need to bring the birds to a registered weigh in station for accurate measurements and most importantly a more accurate harvest report. I agree that its an easy system its just unfortunate that there are so many who dont phone in. |
