I wouldn't think its too bad on them now, they are big enough to fly |
Political Correctness is a doctrine fostered by a delusional, illogical, liberal minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a bowel movement by the clean end

Actually I watched an hour long show once on wild turkeys (showed the life of wild turkeys over a year) and they showed that the poults were flying within 2 weeks (just enough to get into trees). I would think that with all this wet weather, it would be better for them as there would be more bugs for them and easier for them to find them. I think this will be a good year for our turkeys. |

I just watched a show on turkeys last night,"Myths of turkeys".If they get a cold rain it affects them. They don't have the feathers to regulate their body temperture and can die from the cold.Added note they don't drown from opening their mouth into the rain.We had a wet spring and I noticed the polts were way down in this area.Brent J.. |

Wet weather is a killer for turkey poults. 2007 was a great nesting year in northern NY because of dry weather, and most hens recruited large numbers of poults . This year we've had more than enough rain and most hens I've observed lately have had small numbers of poults. Some lost their first clutch due to predation or wet weather and renested, and poults are very small for this time of year. If we have a mild fall they may still make it. It was last year and is this year the same for Grouse chicks. WLK |

The worst time is the middle of May and the month of June. Once the poults get raised big enough and as said about get body cover they need to worry more about predators. Chris Kirby and I talked last week and he said he has seen some good hatches this spring in NY so I sure hope we here in Ontario did ok. I have seen a couple flocks with poults so there is a few around this location... |
