I was out mid morning just slowly taking a walk through the woods. I had my bow with me. My plan was to bust up some birds if i saw or heard any, then get down and call. I didn't see or hear a thing. Was actually hoping to find some good deer sign but really didn't find anything worth putting some time into. This is a woods that i don't deer hunt and no one else has permission to be on, not that it really matters to poachers, but anyway. I was approaching a cut bean field and thought i'd step out very carefully in case i had pushed a doe or something. To my surprise there was about 10 to 15 hens out there, some were poults some adults. They were pecking away, feeding away from me. I estimated 30 yards and let fly. I shot right over one of the adult hens backs, right in line but too high. They didn't fly but walked off pretty fast right out into the middle of the field.I was never going to speak of it but hey, i'm sure it will make all the others who have or will miss a turkey this fall with their bow feel a bit better about it. I have a new Nikon Archers Choice on order but it actually on back order from Nikon, wish i had it. Birds must have been more like 25 or 26? That would have been my first turkey with a compound. I guess it was a bit of a success. Every time i've ever tried to draw on a tom i've been busted, thats without a blind, so that was good. Glass half full right??? |
