Hi everyone,
I know its little early to talk turkey hunting but what the heck.Just wondering what are your plans this year for turkey hunting? What did you learn in the previous year or years from turkey hunting? Are you going to try any new calls this year?
Last year was my first season turkey hunting and I managed to get a jake in the spring on opening day and took a young bird in the fall hunt.I used the triple threat call from quakerboy last spring to take the jake. This year I would like to be able to take a turkey using a mouth call.I can get plenty of noises out of these things but I dont know how effective it will be :D.
Just wondering if anyone is into trying something different this year.
Oh yeah I almost forgot,"I want toms this year,no jakes" :D

think my methods will stay the same, likely will keep it simple
Now when i say simple i have mouth calls, slates, box calls in different woods and materials, different strikers. My poor vest is in need of more pockets if i keep it up.

Will try to do a few weekends and hope to tag out nice and early

Well, my plans for 2009 are going to be a bit different then 08. Since im going to be turning 17 in april, i will have my g2 so i can drive to turkey hunting spots and drive back. I also hope i will be able to get a spare at school for first period so i can get out even more. I use a primos call, which is a slate call. i forget the name but it was awesome. My last two year, i haven't got one. I shot two birds before, a tom and a jake, but in 2007 i let 5 jakes go opening mornig hoping for a tom but never got one. In 2008 i was helping a budy just getting into turkey hunting and he got his first tom, thanks to the help of my uncle, Road. This year i am deffinitly going to get out more and take a nice bird! :allright:
My gun i'm using is a remington 870 pump supermag turkey camo with a remington turkey choke. hope it will do the job :run!!:

Our spring season in NY is May 1st -31 two bearded bird limit. Tons of birds, been hunting them since 1984. Don't care to shoot them much anymore, just call for friends and relatives.
They've become a real nusiance to the farmers here, and most want them all shot.

My grandson will be old enough to hunt them this spring, and I'm looking forward to taking him on the early youth weekend which is the weekend before May 1.

Any of you guys ever get the notion to want to hunt Northern NY, shoot me a e-mail maybe we can work out some kind of swap hunt ? NR tags and lic I think is $75 US, I'm a hour south of the Thousand Island Bridge.

This year I passed on the birds thinking their were too few in the area.Well this fall I can't believe all the birds hanging around. They tend to spend the whole day in the field when It rains.I saw one group of 10 long beards, they all had really nice beards.Their's some where between 60-80 birds and another group of 40 birds down the road.Brent j..

I'm gonna do pretty much the same thing as I did last year. Might get another slate call from gobblestalker and maybe a new decoy or 2.

I also found towards the end of the season that a good tom wouldnt look at a decoy if he had his hen or hens close to him.I think maybe the key is getting your 2 birds out of the way asap.I thought it was tough going towards the end of the season even though i had a chance or two and couldnt quite seal the deal.

This fall was my first Turkey hunt and I managed to bag a 24lb Tom with 28mm spurs and I only spent 4hrs total hunting! I've really found a good honey hole in my area and hope that is remains exclusive this spring. Got me hooked from day 1.

For me the best tool was the trusty box call. My pops got me a hand crafted one from Pensylvania and it worked like a charm. I've also been practicing up on my mouth calls much to the dismay of my wife and dogs! I also got a new doghouse popup blind for X-mas so it should help me exploit some areas that did not have the best cover.

My firearm of choice has to be the REM 870 Super Mag in matte black with a full choke. I've used this for Turkey, Geese, Ducks and Deer (although I only got a chance to shoot Deer targets this year :( ) I got real good camo from the Columbia outlet in Port Huron last year for an absolute steal (5 in 1 jacket and overalls for just shy of 170 bucks) and the wife bought my boots and vest for me for my birthday so I'm set.

I'm already really excited for the spring hunt. It sucks that winter is so long. Oh well, I guess I just got to go shoot some 'yotes to tide me over :biggunz:
