A lot depends on where you are hunting. Adrian would have some good ideas on this. I have seen and used crow calls and owl calls. Have had responses from both at times. Where are you planning to hunt this year Tom? |

Tom, when it comes to locators for turkey hunting you are looking into something that is a tool of the Strategies to hunt Wild Turkey Gobblers. There is not much I have not tested and on a high scale I find the Crow call works as one of the best. Here's the kicker that most don't know. Every crow call makes a different pitch in the sound it makes. That pitch or tone seems to be the answer the gobbler wants to hear and can mean the difference of anwsering or not. So not every crow call will be a success and by trying different calls out may change your chance. High pitched sounds from other calls also work at times, so by trying out different type of calls, can only work in your favor. Owl is one, Elk, Heron, predator calls, Gobble shakers, coyote howlers, goose calls to give you an idea. Locating don't just mean "trying to get a gobble the night before" although that is a good time to locate birds. This places you into a better idea of where the bird is and where you may have a better setup the next morning. Its not unusual to have a gobbler go quiet in the middle of a hunt. This can cunfuse a hunter into making bad moves or bad decissions that can shut a hunt down real fast. A Locating call may work better at these times to understand the location of the bird on the ground and better give you a mental picture of what you should do. If you ever get a copy of Learning the Ropes of Wild Turkey Hunting you will see first hand on a evening locate how a gobbler ignors 2 different sounds and he gobbles back to the 3rd sound. This is the proof that not all sounds work at the moment... |

I've got a crow call and have tried it, but never had it work for me. When I was in Florida at Bass Pro a guy told me they use peacock calls, they even had them for sale in the turkey aisle. |

Ron your correct, yet another call I have and used. The problem I found was that they were not all that good here in Ontario. The peacock works great in Florida because it can sound a lot like the Sandhill Cranes that tend to set off the Osceola Gobblers... |

I was chit-chatting with another hunter in the turkey aisle in Bass Pro in Orlando and he told me about the peacock call. I looked at him like he had three heads? He said they work real well down there. |

the farm i hunt is real hard to get a shock gobble, there is a constant flow of geese flying back and forth and with such the calling is non stop, crows back and forth and i have even tried the crow call i have with no success. The only thing i have ever seen work at this place is the outside phone thats on a speaker at the factory. I have heard nothing all morning, the phone rings on the speaker and low and behold a gobble. |

QB's Crankin crow is the only locator that has worked for but not always. I rely more on getting out there and driving local roads seeing where the birds are at a particular day Before the season opens i will be out at first light listening and watching for birds. The locator calls seem to be so hit and miss for reasons that adrian explained. |

Little TIP ! For anyone that has the QuakerBoy's Cranking crow call. I found a better pitch with this call that is easily done. Take the barrel by one hand and the sounding boards/reed by the other hand and twist the two apart leaving about a 1/4 in space between the barrel and boards. Do not pull it apart, just space it. Now take a deep breath and without biteing but rather just holding the call in your teeth with a good seal around the boards, try a blow. In my opinion this call sound much beter like this. I have video footage of close to hundred crows landing in trees all around me using this call this way. They went completly nuts over the sound of the tone... |

I have used the crow call with some success. If you are walking in when its still dark and want to locate the birds I think the coyote call works well. I found this by accident when I was walking in and some coyotes started barking and the turkeys started gobbling like crazy. I also have used a gobbler shaker a couple times with success. |
