dobber is right you will need borax. I am a taxidermist and this is how the majority of us do them. Remove all flesh and fat from the tail feather base. Some common tools for this removal are knives, scissors, razor blades,scalpals,etc..... If you put a little borax on the fat and meat as you are doing this it will come off easier and help keep the feathers clean. After the flesh is removed you should wash and rinse the feathers. This isn't necessary if there is no blood ,dirt ,or grease on the feathers. I use Dawn dishwashing detergent as it really cuts the grease and oil from the fat. Make sure you RINSE THOROUGHLY or the feathers will lose their fluff after they are dry. After rinsing, dry the feathers. I use a hair blow dryer. If you want to really speed the drying process submerge the feathers in Coleman fuel (white gas) . This will really degrease them and remove the water. Then proceed with the blow drying of the feathers. Once they are dry rub borax into the feather roots and skin. Now spread out the feathers in the desired position on a piece of cardboard or plywood and hold them down with a strip of cardboard and pins or other object to hold the feathers in place until dry. Depending on humidity and temperature it will take two to three weeks to complete drying. The feathers should now hold their shape and are ready to be mounted. Do not substitute borax with salt . It is a common mistake and you may end up with a bug problem. Also be careful with white gas if you use it especially while blow drying .GOOD LUCK! |

Starting to get quite the back log so one of these days I'll have to get caught up and Then I'll post some picture of how I do them. Matt |
